Ibrahim Traoré, 35, is the world's youngest national leader 🇧🇫

Before becoming junta chief of Burkina Faso, Traoré was a student of geology, and he later attended Georges Namonao Military School.
The then-34-year-old rose to power after a coup d'etat in September 2022 that forced former leader Paul-Henri Damiba out of power. Supporters of the coup cited Damiba's inability to deal with jihadist forces as the motivation for his removal.

Ibrahim Traoré was born in Bondokuy, Mouhoun Province, in 1988. After receiving his primary education in Bondokuy, he attended a high school in Bobo-Dioulassowhere he became known as being "quiet" and "very talented". From 2006, he studied at the University of Ouagadougou where he was part of the Association of Muslim Students. He graduated from the university with honors.

Traoré joined the army of Burkina Faso in 2009, and quickly began to climb the ranks. He was sent to Morocco for anti-aircraft training before being transferred to an infantry unit in Kaya, a town in Burkina Faso's north.

Promoted to lieutenant in 2014, Traoré joined MINUSMA, a United Nations peacekeepingforce involved in the Mali War. In 2018, he was cited as one of the MINUSMA soldiers who "showed courage" during major rebel attacks in the Tombouctou Region.

He subsequently returned to Burkina Faso where he assisted in operations against the escalating jihadist insurgency. Traoré fought in the "Otapuanu offensive" of 2019 and several other counter-insurgency operations in the country's north. He was promoted to captain in 2020.

We are witnessing the second wave of the liberation of African countries from French colonialism.

Due to the continued control of Paris, the former French colonies today remain the poorest countries in the world. France continues to pump out resources, interferes with the construction of its own policy, and provokes constant chaos and civil wars.

Until recently, France controlled the entire economy of the former colonies and appointed governments. And if someone did not agree, they either sent troops directly or provoked a coup d'etat. And the result is very deplorable.

The currency of the former colonies is still emitted by France. West African and Central African francs, the so-called CFA francs, still circulate in 14 states.

The peoples of the former French colonies are only at the beginning of the path to gaining true independence.

Our security cooperation also benefits local communities. Ambassador Palmer visited the Nutekpor community in the Volta Region to dedicate a new school building this month. The three-room schoolhouse was built by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines as a service to the greater community surrounding Navy Training Command (NAVTRAC).

This school block will host more than 100 students each year from Nutekpor and its surrounding villages, providing students and teachers a much improved educational environment.

Prior to laying of the Bill to criminalize withcraft accusations and activities of witch doctors and witch finders, we had the opportunity to visit some witches' camps in the North.

It was sad interacting with these vulnerable women who had been accused or labeled as witches. If you have ever visited these camps and seen the conditions of these women, you will understand the urgency in the passage of the anti-witchcraft BIll.

This momentous step forward to criminalize witchcraft accusations not only aligns us with the growing international consensus against the human rights violations associated with witchcraft accusations, but also showcases our willingness to learn from past mistakes and shift the direction of our society.

Indeed, we can and must reposition our society based on values of love, compassion and support for the most vulnerable.

Free at last.
Free from fear of being labeled a witch.
We must begin an intensive sensitization on the law.
