For decades, economics has drawn a hard line: efficiency matters, morality doesn’t.
Laura Segafredo thinks that mindset is broken.

As a former BlackRock climate finance leader – and now Co-Founder of Nature Alpha, a data platform tracking nature and biodiversity risk – she’s seen firsthand what happens when capital ignores human well-being and planetary boundaries. And she’s not keeping those concerns to herself anymore: she’s now also studying theology and co-hosting a podcast about rebuilding a “moral economy.”

🎧 In this episode, Laura and I dig into why moral language disappeared from finance – and why bringing it back might be the key to fixing both markets and the planet.

My guest in this epiosde is Mark Hays, Director of Sustainable & Impact Investing at Glenmede — a firm managing $48 billion with a client-to-employee ratio that keeps conversations personal and strategy focused.

Mark’s journey into finance started early — running a lemonade stand to save up for a Sega Genesis and learning about markets through a third-grade stock project that didn’t go as planned.

That early curiosity eventually led to a career spanning Cambridge Associates, OMERS, Flat World, and J.P. Morgan — where he became the firm’s first U.S. sustainable investing hire.

Now at Glenmede, Mark helps clients align their portfolios with their principles — not just in theory, but through tangible investments.

That includes 2% interest loans to daycare centers in underserved Philadelphia neighborhoods, public equity engagements that pushed Citigroup to improve its gender pay equity, and custom reporting that translates ESG data into real-world outcomes like emissions avoided or gallons of water saved.

🎧 In this episode, Mark shares how Glenmede combines rigorous strategy with deep engagement — and why real impact comes from solutions tailored to each investor’s values, goals, and context. Tune in:

We Put Too Much Faith in Carbon Pricing

Carbon pricing once looked like the answer to unlocking climate action for Laura Segafredo.

But after years in climate finance, she’s become disillusioned with the idea that markets alone can drive the transition we need.

🎧 In this week’s episode, Laura – now Chief Growth Officer at NatureAlpha – shares:

💎what she learned building climate products at BlackRock
💎why investors urgently need better nature-based risk data
💎 how economics lost its moral compass (and why we need to bring it back)

Investing in a Resilient, Sustainable Future

At Temasek, their mission goes beyond financial returns - they’re driving long-term portfolio resilience and creating value while achieving ambitious goals like Net Zero, nature-positive, and inclusive growth.

Every investment must meet 100% ESG criteria—a standard they’ve built through years of education and transformation since 2018. By embedding sustainability into every decision, we ensure their portfolio is aligned with a greener, more inclusive future.

In this episode, I am talking to Sugandhi Matta, Chief Impact Officer at ABC Impact — the largest Pan-Asian impact-dedicated private equity fund, with nearly $900 million in assets under management.

Sugandhi didn’t set out to work in impact. She began her career focused on growth and returns — first at Temasek, and later at Actis. But after a breast cancer diagnosis in her early thirties, she returned to work with a new question: What if she could apply her investing skills to businesses solving real problems?

That question led her to LeapFrog Investments — and eventually to ABC Impact, where she became one of the founding members. From the ground up, she helped build a fund that integrates impact into every step of the investment process, from deal screening to reporting.

Today, ABC focuses on scalable companies advancing climate resilience, health, education, food systems, and financial inclusion across Asia.

🎧 Tune in to hear how Sugandhi helped build ABC Impact from the ground up — and what it takes to run a fund that treats impact with the same discipline as financial performance.
