Had an amazing conversation with cinematographer Ross Emery, ACS today! Look for the podcast interview with him in the coming weeks...

We chat about a philosophy of integrity in lighting, his experience working on films like The Matrix (he was 2nd unit DP, shooting bullet time & big effects shots), The Wolverine (he was 1st unit DP), and of course his sublime work on the new Ridley Scott series for HBO Max, Raised by Wolves.

Head into the weekend by entering the minds of the filmmakers behind the Emmy-nominated Netflix series, Mindhunter—cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt, ASC and “A” camera operator Brian Osmond, SOC. The two of them also teamed up to shoot the highly-anticipated upcoming David Fincher film, Mank.

In this 7th episode of the Art of the Shot podcast, you’ll get an inside view into the close working relationship they have, the techniques and thought processes behind the choices they’re making on set, working with David Fincher, the importance of having a dedicated camera operator on set, especially a David Fincher set, why there's no such thing as a B camera "bonus shot" on Mindhunter, and how shots are planned out for multiple cameras.

They also discuss the innovative car process shooting on Mindhunter and how that works, the custom RED digital cinema camera built for the show, the very cool things Erik did regarding lenses and art directing the optical artifacts in every shot, why Brian prefers a fluid head over a geared head to achieve those smooth, precise shots David Fincher loves, and so much more!

Listen, learn, enjoy, subscribe, and take your best shot!⁣
