🚨 UEG - United European Gastroenterology calls for urgent EU action on obesity and digestive health

Obesity is driving a rise in digestive diseases and cancers across Europe, particularly in people under 50 — yet prevention remains underfunded and fragmented.

At the European Parliament, United European Gastroenterology (UEG) urged policymakers to treat obesity as a systemic, multifactorial condition, moving beyond individual blame towards person-centred, multidisciplinary care.

As Prof. Patrizia Burra (Padua University, Italy) explained:
“Recognizing obesity as a systemic, multifactorial condition means moving away from individual blame and adopting a more holistic, person-centred model of care.”

The call to action is clear: EU-wide binding measures, stronger screening, and integrated care pathways are needed to reverse the growing burden of obesity-related digestive disease.
