Latinx Center to celebrate Cesar Chavez Day with community event
FLINT, Mich. — The Latinx Center is inviting community members to celebrate National Cesar Chavez Day Saturday afternoon.

The event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Flint Institute of Arts, where Mexican-Americans and Chavez supporters will gather to honor the labor and civil rights activist's birthday.

The celebration will also pay tribute to fellow labor icon Dolores Huerta and early union members.

Executive Director Asa Ascencio Zuccaro emphasized the significance of recognizing these contributions.

"Recognizing the contributions of an individual like Caesar Shavas and Dolores Huerta in today's time is so incredibly important because it's important to remember that all these different cultures and all these different people and identities are playing a role in shaping our histories and the fabric of our society and making contributions to what we know today in our American society," said Zuccaro.

Cesar Chavez was a Mexican-American labor leader and civil rights activist who dedicated his life to la causa (the cause) – that is, improving living and working conditions for US farm workers. He was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi to act through nonviolent resistance, achieving pay raises and improved conditions during the 1960s and 1970s. He also founded the National Farm Workers Association (now the United Farm Workers) alongside fellow activists Dolores Huerta and Gilbert Padilla. Chavez was a prolific figure in the Chicano Movement of the 1960s, and his legacy is a critical part of Chicano identity across the country, especially in California.

Chávez was born in 1927 in Yuma, Arizona, dropping out of school is eighth grade to help support his family. He made his lasting impression on American culture during his highly successful Delano grape vine strike from 1965 to 1970.

Alongside Dolores Huerta, he co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, later becoming the United Farm Workers Union.

Chavez and the UFW served a fundamental role in passing the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act in 1975 – making California the first state to give farm workers the right to seek union representation.

He died at the age of 60 on April 23, 1993, in San Luis, Arizona.

The Holiday is formally observed in California, Arizona, Washington, and Utah. It is an optional holiday in Colorado and Texas, and a festival day in Nevada and Nebraska.

Former Gov. Gray Davis signed the holiday into state legislation in 2000.

Chicago Cubs Promote Top Prospect to Finalize Opening Day Roster
The Chicago Cubs released their opening day roster before their game with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which included their top prospect. The Chicago Cubs announced their opening-day roster early Tuesday morning in Japan in final preparations for the game with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The most notable move was the pWhile no one is necessarily devastated about that swap, it leaves a gap at third base.

Having Michael Busch move over from first to third seemed like an option as well, but Jed Hoyer has stated that Busch is seen as a potential Gold Glove first baseman and they have no desire to change his position.

This all points to one answer for who is going to be playing third base for Chicago in 2025, at least in the hopes of team decision makers.

Top prospect Matt Shaw is the obvious solution for the Cubs as they try to figure out their team, not just for 2025, but beyond as well.romotion of third baseman Matt Shaw, who will be on the 26-man roster for the game. The starting lineups had not been announced when the roster was released and reported by outlets, including the Chicago Sun-Times' Maddie Lee.

Chicago Cubs top prospect Matt Shaw makes MLB debut on Opening Day at Tokyo DomeTOKYO — Matt Shaw went through his regular routine Tuesday afternoon.

He fielded ground balls at third base as part of his infield work before taking batting practice, chatting with teammates between rounds. But for as normal as Shaw’s process was during the Chicago Cubs’ pregame work, everything else presented a unique day for the organization’s top prospect. Shaw became the 33rd Cubs player to make his MLB debut on Opening Day before turning 24 years old, the first since Gary Scott in 1991, according to team historian Ed Hartig.

Shaw slotted fifth in the order for Tuesday’s opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers at the Tokyo Dome. The Cubs thought Shaw could quickly move through the minor leagues when they selected him 13th overall in the 2023 draft. Development is rarely linear, but from president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer’s perspective, Shaw impressed by handling his 1½ years in the minors “exceptionally well.”

It’s fun, but ultimately, it’s about staying here. It’s about performing.

Cubs star Dansby Swanson has advice for Matt Shaw ahead of MLB debutDansby Swanson was once in the shoes of Matt Shaw.

The Chicago Cubs shortstop was a 1st-round pick, a top prospect and a player with plenty of expectations on his shoulders when it was time to make his big-league debut. Shaw was the Cubs’ 2023 1st-round pick, currently is their top prospect and is expected to be the team’s Opening Day third baseman when the season begins against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday.

The best guidance Swanson can offer the young rookie could be the worst, too, though.

“Because it’s basically you got to figure out what works for you,” Swanson told reporters in a press conference after the Cubs’ 4-2 win over the Yomiuri Giants at the Tokyo Dome on Sunday.

[Cubs takeaways: What we learned in 4-2 win vs. Yomiuri Giants in Japan]

Make no mistake, Swanson will be around and offer guidance to the 23-year-old infielder when he can, but a lot of the learning curve that comes with breaking into the big leagues comes on your own. The successes and challenges Shaw will face won’t be the same as what Swanson faced when he broke through in the majors.

“I think that the more that you play, the more that you get experience – the only way to get experience is by playing and so it’s going to be on him to figure those things out,” Swanson said.

Shaw’s mindset and preparation, at least early on, suggest he could be on the right pace. That’s translated to results early on this spring. After starting spring training on the sidelines with oblique soreness, Shaw rehabbed, returned and cracked the team’s 31-man travel roster that headed to Japan for the 2025 Tokyo Series.

Before boarding the jet to Tokyo, Shaw hit .313 in six Cactus League contests in Arizona. On Sunday, in the final exhibition game before the regular season, Shaw delivered a two-run, two-out, bases-loaded base hit that proved to be the difference in the Cubs’ win over one of the premier franchises from Japan.
