Today’s Creature Comfort Feature - El Salvador’s national dish, pupusas 🇸🇻 Pupusas originate thousands of years ago from the Pipil people of Pre-Columbus Mesoamerica. They’re made from masa shaped into small discs, stuffed with cheese, beans, and sometimes meat. Then fried on a griddle and served with curtido, Cheap, filling, and tasty - one of our fav combos. Find em at pupuserias & food carts 🫘🧀🌽

One of our favorite series at Digest is Creature Comforts - foods that make you feel right. We can’t give each one its own article, but we still want to share some of our favorites with you.

Today’s Creature Comfort Feature is zong, aka zong zi, aka Chinese tamales. In plainer terms, sticky riced steamed and wrapped in bamboo leaves. These are a Cantonese staple traditionally made to coincide with the Dragon Boat Festival. Zong can be found at most Chinese bakeries or supermarkets like 99 Ranch. Fillings are usually savory with with mung bean, peanuts, and pork, but sometimes zong are sweet with red bean filling. Try a savory one with a little oyster sauce. They also freeze well if you ever want to stock up.
