I’ve had enough of watching this happen over and over again. Most of our countries have made efforts to educate us on being decent human beings, but ultimately, it’s a personal choice to be respectful or act otherwise.
I agree with the gentleman at the end of my post; he makes a valid point. Because we judge based on experience, but let me tell you one thing: immigration status has nothing to do with being a respectful, decent human being. There are plenty of people who may not have legal status in this country, yet they act way better than some citizens. Unfortunately, we don’t always help our case as Hispanics. We are a proud community; you’ll see us walking around with shirts displaying our flags or simply our plain flags in our cars. But why don’t we carry the same pride wherever we go, picking up our trash and following the rules? He’s not wrong; that’s what he sees. That’s what we show him. It’s just that it’s not only immigrants who do it.
However, when someone claims that El Salvador or any other country doesn’t pick up trash or teach cleanliness, that’s simply not true. It’s possible that in certain rural areas, trash pick-up might not be as frequent or prioritized.
It’s high time we change this mindset. Why aren’t there stricter sanctions? Where are the authorities to enforce the law? I’ve called dispatch plenty of times, and either nothing happens or they arrive too late. I don’t care if someone calls me a snitch; I will call dispatch if I see someone acting recklessly. I’ve done my best to raise awareness and help my own community break free from these destructive habits, and I’m not alone. There are many of us on Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook who are trying to send a positive message about following the rules and picking up our trash. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always reach the right people. It’s disheartening that out of 300 followers, maybe only 10 like the post and three share it and that’s on a good day. But when it comes to something negative, everybody piles up, everyone wants to comment, and everyone has an opinion.
I know it’s not all of us, but sadly, we turn a blind eye to these issues time and time again.
I’m sick of this. It’s time for a change. Let’s rise above and create a better future together. 💪🌎
PS. Before anyone says anything about this being in English, FB has had a translation button on posts for years now.
