When 28-year-old Mengqi Ji left China to marry her American husband in Missouri, she believed she was chasing love, not tragedy. The two had met overseas, fallen for each other, and started a family—but behind closed doors, the marriage had turned toxic. On October 8, 2019, Mengqi vanished without a trace. Her husband, Joseph Elledge, told police she simply walked out and never came back. But investigators soon uncovered something chilling—secret audio recordings of Joe ranting about his anger toward her, and evidence from his phone showing strange late-night drives into rural Missouri just days after she disappeared.

For over a year, Mengqi’s whereabouts remained a mystery until her remains were found near the Lamine River, buried beneath the soil. Prosecutors revealed that the very man who claimed to love her had murdered her and hidden her body—then tried to play the role of the worried husband. His own recordings, location data, and contradictions exposed him. In the end, he was convicted of second-degree murder, his words and actions becoming the very evidence that sealed his fate. Mengqi’s story serves as a haunting reminder of how love can sometimes hide a monster in plain sight.
