Give these a listen, not so much for me, but for the content they contain. Something compelled these people to sit down and have authentic and vulnerable conversations with me, a stranger. What they share is powerful. You don’t have to be into hiking to gain meaningful insights and inspiration from these interviews.
If you like or believe in this project, consider supporting the work in some way. More listens help it grow to a point that we can approach potential advertisers and sponsors. You can also make a one time donation or a monthly pledge by becoming a Patreon member. Patreon members get some pretty sweet discounts and freebies.
My goal is to grow this to a point that it generates income that is self sustaining. Currently all this work generates no income. Book sales, essentially cover the printing costs. My income comes from odd jobs, manual labor and selling off personal camera gear and darkroom equipment. I don’t mind hard work, but it keeps me tethered locally. A little bit of money buys some time to go work on a project, or like this week, spend five days focused on developing film and editing podcast interviews.
I think this is meaningful work. I’m going to do it even if it doesn’t pay. It’s my offering to the universe. Besides, I’m too far gone and feral to fit in to some American dream.
If you like it. Consider supporting the work and please what it with others. 🤙❤️

The Appalachian Trail Days festival turned into an eight day adventure of fun, work and connection. It was such a joy to collaborate with other passionate and creative people. I believe we may have started a tradition.
Going in, I didn’t have high expectations. I had just a handful of books to sell, but looked forward to being around hiker trash friends that I have become quite fond of. I enjoyed seeing them putting their work out to the world and receive loving and positive feedback from others.
I put out a homemade sign inviting people to tell their story and sign up for a Hiker Trash Podcast interview . I was blown away at the number of people eager to do so. Even before the festival began we were recording stories. I remained booked all day every day for four days. It was exhausting and fulfilling at the same time. It didn’t bother me that I was doing all this work without compensation. Perhaps,
If I continue the good work, money will follow.
Listening to their stories, in their own words was heartbreaking and inspiring. Many eyes filled with tears. It was encouraging to see people willing to be vulnerable. I clung to the edge of holding back a raging cry for days. The struggles of real people finding their way through this life and overcoming despair is the essence of the meaning of life. When you listen to the coming new episodes of the Hiker Trash Podcast, I think you will agree.
If you would like to support this work, you can make a one time gift, join our Patreon or advertise/sponsor podcast episodes. You can also purchase books and fine art prints. Visit the links in our bio or send a DM.
The above photo was made by creator of , as a small group of us played and danced about the summit of Max Patch. No one seemed bothered that the clouds and coming rain hid the setting sun and the rising full moon. ❤️

A little rewind in my mind remembering this personal project from 2009 that changed my approach to photography. Unlocked was my passion to create bodies work, rather than numbers of unrelated individual images.
