For the past year, the ABRS+ Equicentric Futures Project has been working alongside riding schools to explore a simple but powerful idea: what changes when we begin by asking what the horse is experiencing? 🤔

The results have been remarkable.

Centres discovered that small changes in how we understand horses, support riders and develop our teams can improve horse welfare while also creating more confident staff, better client experiences and stronger, more resilient businesses.

Now we're taking that conversation further.

Throughout the day you'll discover how these ideas connect:

🐴 Equicentric thinking – practical lessons from the Futures Project.

🦴 Biomechanics – understanding how comfort, movement and rider balance influence the horse's experience.

🤝 Creating the conditions for change – why the best ideas only succeed when people feel safe to learn, question and experiment.

🐎 Communication in action – Georgie Wood demonstrates how trust, balance and understanding can transform the relationship between horse and rider, showing what's possible when communication becomes the priority.

And because running a riding school is about far more than horses, we'll also tackle the realities every proprietor faces:

✔ Supporting staff wellbeing
✔ Building healthy workplace cultures
✔ Planning for a sustainable future

This isn't just a day of presentations. It's an opportunity to step back, challenge assumptions, share ideas with colleagues and leave with practical actions you can take straight back to your own riding school.

“𝙃𝙚’𝙨 𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝘽𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙇𝙖𝙯𝙮”… 𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲? 🐴

Horses can’t tell us when something hurts but they’re often very good at showing us in quieter ways.

As owners, it’s easy to anthropomorphise our horses’ behaviour and dismiss these subtleties as laziness or stubbornness. But sometimes what first looks like a training issue (or personality trait!) can actually be a horse trying to cope with discomfort.

Subtle lameness and musculoskeletal pain don’t always present as obvious head nodding or dramatic limping. Instead, the signs can be much more nuanced.

You might notice a horse that suddenly feels less willing to go forward, struggles with transitions, finds one rein more difficult than the other, drifts through corners or circles, or becomes disunited in canter. Others may feel tense through the back, reluctant to accept contact, or simply “not quite right” under saddle.

There can be many possible reasons for this from mild lameness, back pain or gastric ulcers, to saddle fit issues, or muscular discomfort after a change in workload. Often it’s a combination.

This is where your observations matter. You know your horse’s normal way of going better than anyone, and small changes are often the first clues that something isn’t quite right.

Before reaching for a stronger bit or adding gadgets, it’s worth pausing to ask 𝙬𝙝𝙮 the behaviour is happening in the first place. Look for patterns. When does it occur? Has anything changed in work, routine, tack or management?

Horses communicate through their behaviour and those changes are often clues rather than defiance.

The truth is, most horses aren’t lazy, stubborn, or being difficult on purpose. They aren’t malicious or manipulative by nature but they also can’t tell us when something hurts.

You blink, and suddenly they’re looking all grown up. 🥺

It’s such a bittersweet feeling. So much pride in how well they’re doing, mixed with the realisation that they’re not babies anymore. But if I focus on the positives, it also means I now have an extra day each week that I can dedicate to my marketing clients.

🆘 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 🆘

Looking at our newsfeeds, it’s clear we’re all feeling it right now. Winter with horses can feel less like a hobby and more like a full scale survival challenge… short dark days, endless mud, relentless rain, the odd bitter cold snap to add a little extra peril and just the occasional glimpse of that big yellow thing in the sky to keep us going! 🌧️❄️☀️

But lighter days ARE on their way. In February, we gain around two extra minutes of daylight every day. It might not sound like much, but by the end of the month that adds up to nearly an extra hour of daylight and mud tackled in daylight feels far more manageable than mud tackled in the dark, doesn’t it?

So, as we grind through this final stretch of winter, let’s share a bit of community cheer. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀?
