An employee at the Dollar General less than a mile from the home, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the case, said he regularly saw Siders Jr. and Elizabeth shopping shortly before the store closed.
The employee said the couple typically came into the store several nights a week and stood out because of what he described as poor hygiene and disheveled clothing.
"It seemed as if she was always consistently pregnant or in labor in some way," the employee said of Elizabeth.
He said the couple occasionally purchased diapers but otherwise bought milk, chips and other shelf-stable foods. He also recalled them cycling through multiple payment cards while checking out.
"They would play with multiple different cards, one with like $1 on it," he said. "They would just shuffle through them."
Looking back, the employee said he wonders whether there was something more he could have done.
"It makes me question my own actions. Whether or not I should have asked them about it, or see if they needed anything, or anything I could have done to maybe prevent this in any way, because there were signs."
Still, he acknowledged those observations never rose to the level where he believed authorities needed to be contacted.
"But not enough to really do something about it," he said.
