Many students may not answer their teacher’s questions today at Palo Alto High School — not in an act of rebellion, but as a part of the second annual Day of (No) Silence at Palo Alto High.

The event is hosted by Paly Alto High’s Gender & Sexuality Alliance Club with its primary goal to actively support the LGBTQ+ community, allied students and allied staff, according to the Gender & Sexuality Alliance’s official Instagram account.

The hums of the railroad line buzzed through the Mountain View High School Spartan Theater as the audience was transported to “Hadestown.” A burning red oculus beckoned from the back of the set, jazz musicians played in full view and an onstage bar offered Hadestown-themed drinks to the audience before the show.

Mountain View High sold out all three performances of the spring musical, “Hadestown,” last week.

As over 1,500 Valley Transportation Authority employees strike to protest for higher wages and disability leave, there will be reduced services in Santa Clara County, leaving many high school students and commuters without public transportation.

Routes to Mountain View High School, Foothill and De Anza College, El Camino Hospital and Fremont Union High School district have been affected. According to VTA’s October 2024 data, over 104,000 people on an average weekday use their buses for their commutes in Santa Clara County.

Chants erupted and car horns blared outside the Tesla showroom in Palo Alto as over a hundred protesters rallied on Saturday against the Trump administration’s mass federal worker layoffs, Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency and the administration as a whole.

Demonstrators marched down El Camino Real, waving signs that read “Stand with Ukraine” and “Stop Musk’s coup.”

Across the Bay Area, hundreds of other protestors gathered at Santana Row, Sunnyvale, Oakland and San Francisco to oppose Elon Musk’s growing governmental role.

Nine-year-old Eedha Mehta didn’t expect to find herself on a squash court. She’d tried basketball, soccer, dance, and swimming. Nothing clicked. But after watching her younger brother train at the Bay Club in Redwood City and feeling drawn to the sport’s intensity, she decided to give squash a shot — and hasn’t looked back since.

Today, as a senior at Los Altos High School, Mehta is committed to playing squash at Yale University in the fall and is currently ranked tenth in the United States. She competed at the British Open at just 12 years old and at the Egyptian Open last summer. Earlier in her career, she was the top-ranked US Girls Under-15 player.

Dozens of community members carried signs reading messages like “Stop cancel culture” and “Respect our educators” in anticipation of a resolution calling for Board Trustee Rowena Chiu’s resignation. The PAUSD board meeting on Tuesday was the first chance for the public to speak to the board directly since the special Jan. 23 meeting that resulted in the PAUSD Ethnic Studies graduation requirement passing in a 3-2 vote.

In response to Chiu’s X post, PAUSD Board President Shana Segal and PAUSD Vice President Shounak Dharap co-wrote a resolution urging Chiu to discuss concerns about her social media activity with district staff and be reassigned to another county liaison role.

Chiu then proposed a motion to only address the second clause of the resolution and to reassign herself as the Los Altos Town Council Liaison, a member of the Santa Clara County Committee on District Organization and a member of the Santa Clara County School Boards Association. The board passed Chiu’s proposed motion in a 4-1 vote despite Chiu’s dissent on her own proposal.

Gunn High School is piloting a new grading policy this school year — evidence-based teaching and learning — which is designed to favor student growth and understanding over traditional test scores, Gunn High Assistant Principal Kathryn Catalano said.

Although not yet mandated by Palo Alto Unified School District, the district has encouraged teachers to gradually adopt the new grading policy. At Gunn High, evidence-based grading is being piloted in all AP Chemistry, Chemistry, Algebra 1, AP Computer Science Principles, AP English Literature, AP Physics 1, AP Physics C, Conceptual Physics and Physics classes.

Evidence-based teaching and learning has been used at Gunn High in the past and many staff started offering professional evidence-based teaching and learning development for volunteer teachers in 2023.

Los Alto High’s student-run theater club, Blue Broadway, performed its debut performance of the musical “Xanadu” last Friday. The show marks their second production as a club, with their first production, “A VHS Christmas Carol,” last year.

In the show “Xanadu,” the leader of the nine Greek goddesses, Clio, comes alive from a mural in Venice Beach, Los Angeles. The musical follows her journey to inspire struggling artist Sonny Malone, in their hopes of finding Xanadu and creating the “apex of all the arts:” a roller disco.
