My dear old friend Rasheed (I’ve known him since I was 17) has just opened something really special: Brighton’s first ever LGBTQ+-centred record shop, Dream Street Records. Hard to believe it didn’t already exist, but he’s done the research and this really is the first: https://www.instagram.com/dreamstreetbrighton/

Rash has long been known in Brighton for setting up charities, drop-ins and safe spaces for his community. Dream Street is him following his dream — creating a welcoming space that champions and foregrounds LGBTQ+ musicians and artists. It’s already developing a reputation as a proper community hub.

It deserves to thrive, so if you’d like to support what he’s doing, give Dream Street a follow on Instagram and help spread the word.

Damian O’Neill -an crann steps out

A while back Tompkins Square asked me to put together an Irish edition of their excellent solo guitar compilation series Imaginational Anthem with some of my favourite Irish guitarists. Pleased to say it will be coming out October 24th and I’m excited for people to hear it because I think it turned out great. My contribution is an old Irish harp tune called I Am Asleep And Do Not Waken Me which you can hear at the usual spots online and preorder the album via this link

Bangs and Talbot get back to business with a stonking new 45 for 2025 - their take on the instrumental classic ‘K Jee’. Out 1 October / Pre-order now!

Originally by US band the Nite Liters (an instrumental precursor to soul act New Birth), this classic track has been a club favourite for decades. It was later covered by MFSB and included in the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

Taken from their forthcoming album on Acid Jazz, this latin disco funk flavoured jam is written by Motown hit producer Harvey Fuqua and Charles Hearndon. It features Mick Talbot on Wurlitzer, organ and piano, ably assisted by German funk guitarist Felix Fraenkel, Italy’s Donato Greco on flute, brass from California’s Dan C, and drums, percussion, and bass from original Acid Jazz DJ/producer Chris Bangs.

On the flip is a Mick Talbot-original ‘Re-Micks’ from the ‘Back to Business’ sessions, which gets a heavy duty live boom bap rework by hip hop pioneer DJ Premier Inn.

Presented on black vinyl in a new colour version of the current Acid Jazz house-bag, with labels reminiscent of the classic RCA design for an authentic ’70s touch…
