Calamities reveal not just natureโ€™s strength, but also the fragility of systems and the moral compass of leaders. Floods may sweep through cities, but the deeper tragedy is how greed turns natural disasters into man-made catastrophes. When public resources end up in private hands, the damage multiplies. Each peso misused is a life left hanging, a family left stranded, a future left uncertain.

What's the use of disaster preparedness if the governance is consumed by greed? We do not just need flood control, we need moral control. We need leaders who see public service not as an opportunity for enrichment but as a duty of stewardship.

Citizens, too, play a role. Silence and complacency allow corruption to thrive. If people accept greed as the โ€œnew normalโ€, then each calamity will only deepen the nationโ€™s wounds. Accountability must not be seasonal; it should be as constant as the rain that tests us each year.

Floodwaters eventually recede, but the corruption that seeps into the system lingers. The fight against greed begins with us. Demand transparency, ensure accountability, and avoid complacency. Greed thrives in shadows, so letโ€™s confront it with vigilance and integrity. Only then can we rise beyond the flood, and beyond betrayal.

The University of Rizal System (URS) Cainta Campus conducted an earthquake drill from yesterday, Sept. 11, 2025. This was in line with the 3rd Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill. The activity reaffirms the universityโ€™s strong commitment to ensuring safety and strengthening disaster preparedness across its academic community.

The earthquake drill, initiated by the Campus Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) through its coordinator, Prof. Ramil M. Uminga, involved students, faculty, and staff in the simulated emergency procedures designed to prepare them for real-life earthquake scenarios.

The conduct of the drill was carried out in accordance with the following procedures:

โ— Alarm Signal โ€“ The siren or bell with a whistle signified the start of the drill.

โ— Duck, Cover, and Hold On (DCH) โ€“ All participants maintained position for 60 seconds or one full minute.

โ— Evacuation โ€“ Once the bell stopped, participants evacuated through the Main Gate ONLY. The use of the fire exits and the gate near the PE and Music Room was strictly prohibited, since the old emergency stairs have been deemed unsafe and may pose risks during an actual evacuation. Students were reminded to always keep right while moving out to maintain order.

โ— Headcount โ€“ At the assembly area, participants were accounted for by Class Presidents and Secretaries, who promptly reported the results to their professors.

By strictly adhering to these procedures, the drill strengthened vigilance, discipline, and awareness, helping participants respond more effectively in the event of an actual earthquake.
