🔸 For over a year, Georgians have been taking to the streets every night to protest against the increasingly authoritarian tendencies of the pro-Russian Georgian Dream party-led government. Accused of steering the country away from its European path and rapidly implementing the illiberal playbook at work in hashtag , and other countries in the region, the executive is secretly controlled by the country's richest man, billionaire Bidzina .

🔸 With the opposition silenced, journalists imprisoned, the media and civil society subjugated, and elections rigged, it seems that nothing is missing from the Georgian Dream's autocratic repertoire. Yet Georgians continue to express their desire to escape Moscow's embrace and their attachment to Europe and its values.

🔸 Where does the country stand today? Is there still hope of returning to the path of the European Union and democracy? What is the mood among Georgians? Will Mzia Amaglobeli, a journalist who has been detained for more than nine months and a recipient of the Sakharov Prize, be released anytime soon?

🔮 As is tradition, we're closing out the year with predictions for the coming twelve months, prepared especially for Voxeurop by 🇳🇱 political scientist Cas Mudde. This year our favourite specialist of the far right (and member of our press cooperative) points to a paradox: the future of European democracy may turn on two countries whose autocratic drift has defined 2025.

🗳️ Polls suggest that both Viktor hashtag and Donald hashtag are heading for serious defeats in their upcoming dates with the voters – respectively, 🇭🇺 's general election in April and the 🇺🇸 US in November. Such an outcome would weaken the influence of these two figures, widely seen as leaders of the internal and external opposition to the 🇪🇺 European Union.

War made sustainable: how green investment funds bankroll the arms industry with EU backing

Although they are intended to finance sustainable initiatives, green investments in defence firms have surged in recent years, topping €50 billion in 2025. The trend is driven by concerted pressure from the arms industry backed by the European Commission. Both seem determined to convince banks that weaponry can be made “sustainable”.

An investigation in partnership with El País, IrpiMedia and Mediapart.

In , where the struggles of transgender people are already deeply rooted, shelters that specialise in welcoming trans migrants have produced a model that is being replicated across Italy.

Today, these facilities accommodate 28 people in seven shelters named after feminist and LGBT+ rights activists, such as Marielle Franco, bell hooks and Sylvia Rivera.

📅 Save the date! Tuesday 9 December at 1:30 p.m. CET

How is democracy faring in 🇭🇺 , and who is the autocratic Viktor Orbán’s challenger? Is there still support for the EU and a European identity? What of press freedom and the independent media that still exists? How do Hungarians see the war in and Donald 's peace plan? How is the economy doing?

🎙️ We'll be discussing all this with Hungarian journalists Boróka Parászka and Gyorgy Folk from the independent magazine hvg.hu on Tuesday 9 December at 1:30 p.m. CET. The chat will be in English and moderated by Catherine André and Gian-Paolo Accardo.

Europe is racing to protect children online. The continent is torn between banning certain content, implementing age verification and addressing privacy risks, while also holding platforms accountable. There is a form of "banal nationalism" lurking behind the defence of culinary traditions, which can even deploy the language of Sovereigntism. The phenomenon is also fueled by European food policies.

Derrière la défense des traditions alimentaires se cache une forme de “nationalisme ordinaire”, qui culmine parfois avec l’emploi d’un langage souverainiste.

🇧🇪 ’s refusal to seize 🇷🇺 ’s frozen billions to help 🇺🇦 is framed as prudence.

In reality, says Xhabir Deralla in this strong op-ed, it shields profit over principle — and risks turning Europe’s financial heart into a refuge for aggression.

Several EU countries have introduced s*x education and/or emotional and relational education in schools, but there is still a lot of resistance, reinforced by the conservative wave sweeping across the continent. Consent, gender relations, domination and s*xual violence can (and must) be discussed with young people.
