Ever spent hours working hard only to realize you haven't accomplished anything important? It happens to me all the time—running hard but standing still. I once read a quote that said, "Things are not always what they seem." This idiom expresses the idea that appearances can be misleading, and that our initial judgments about the world may need to be revised upon further investigation. It suggests that the apparent order and coherence we see in the world is more a product of how our human mind works, rather than being the reality itself....

The thing I wish I had known before is the concept of the focusing illusion, as explained by the renowned psychologist and Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman. According to Kahneman, the focusing illusion occurs when people overemphasize certain aspects of their experiences while neglecting others, leading to a distorted perspective. In the context of a career, Kahneman's explanation of the focusing illusion suggests that we should not overly concentrate on specific achievements or setbacks, but rather maintain a balanced view of our long-term goals and daily work....

Don't worry, I will explain. The principle is known as loss aversion. The idea is that losses are psychologically more powerful than gains. It all starts with our lizard brain and the millions of years spent in the Jungle evolving. We evolved for life in the Jungle. Being extremely sensitive to potential losses had survival advantages for our ancestors. Avoiding risks that could lead to losses of resources, food, shelter, etc....
