Earl Kim's Intensive "Sumo Wrestling" is perfect for actors looking to wrestle with the cultural & physical concepts of SUMO!
This workshop introduces the techniques and practices developed by James Yaegashi, Chelsea Pace, and Earl T. Kim during the development of the new play Sumo by Lisa Sanaye Dring both at the La Jolla Playhouse (2023) and The Public Theatre (2025). The workshop introduces Sumo as combat sport, ritual, and performance, and how physical language was developed to serve both the dynamic cultural expression of storytelling while maintaining safety and repeatability. The workshop will address the ritualistic and cultural depths of the sport/art, the martial techniques that are its foundation, and how the ancient and contemporary ideas of sport and spectacle have contributed to its development.
* As Mawashi (traditional sumo belts) are not provided, participants are recommended to bring workout shorts with a comfortable waistband. *
