2025 CDF EMPOWERMENT BENEFICIARIES UNDERGO FINANCIAL LITERACY TRAINING IN LUMEZI

Lumezi Town Council has convened a financial literacy training for all 2025 Constituency Development Fund CDF loans and grants empowerment beneficiaries drawn from across the Lumezi Constituency.

The financial literacy training attracted representatives of all 63 clubs and cooperatives that will receive grants empowerment and 31 successful loan beneficiaries in Lumezi.

The financial literacy training is a necessary undertaking by the Local Authority before the empowerment funds can be disbursed to beneficiaries as a measure to ensure accountability and prudent utilization of the public resources by all recipients of the empowerment.

The Council earlier planned to hold a ceremonial handover of the loans and grants on Tuesday, 17th June, 2025 but the event has been put on hold following the extension of the national mourning period in honour of Zambia's 6th Republican President, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu who died in South Africa.

During the financial literacy training, three representatives from each of the 63 clubs and cooperatives namely; Chairperson, Treasurer and Secretary were invited to attend the training in order to inculcate responsible use of the funds once disbursed into the beneficiaries bank accounts.

And a director or representative of the registered business receiving the CDF loans were also invited to the training particularly to emphasize the need to repay the loans in time in order for other residents of Lumezi to benefit from the revolving fund.

Under the CDF grants, beneficiaries will receive varying empowerment of between K30,000 to K40,000 while loan beneficiaries will receive between K50,000 to K200,000 kwacha to venture into various businesses covering poultry, stationery, winter farming, logistics and buying and selling of grains among others.

And during the financial literacy training, Indo Zambia Bank Lundazi branch made presentations on budgeting, financial management financial, procurement, records keeping, plan reviews, marketing and savings among others.

The bank went further to explain details of the loan agreement form to CDF loan beneficiaries; terms of the loan, repayment period, interest rate, penalties for monthly late deposits and bank charges.

Other presenters during the training were; Lumezi Town Council Fisheries, Livestock and Veterinary Services Department and the Council's Department of Community Development.

Fellow Citizens,

As we mark the 14th day since the demise of our 6th Republican President, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, we reflect on the past two weeks, not only as a period of mourning, but a time for healing, and indeed a test of our resolve as a peace loving and law-abiding nation.

We wish to begin by expressing our gratitude to the church, our traditional leaders and the citizenry for their moral and spiritual guidance during this time.

We also wish to thank our envoys, including our former Vice President Mr. Enock Kavindele, his Royal Highness Chief Mumbi, our Foreign Affairs Minister, the Secretary to the Cabinet, and all others involved in the search for a reasonable, inclusive and amicable resolution over the unfortunate impasse relating to the state funeral.

We express sincere gratitude to President Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa for their exceptional cooperation and compassion.

We acknowledge those citizens, including business owners, whose operations have been affected during this difficult time.

We thank you for your resilience, patience, solidarity and calmness during this time.

As you are all aware, our government has made numerous efforts to engage the family and representatives of the late President, in order to reach consensus in this matter.

By last Sunday, 15th of June, a mutual understanding was achieved and was expressed through the joint press briefing in South Africa.

This breakthrough brought relief to the nation, and we were prepared to receive the remains of the late 6th Republican President on Wednesday, 18th of June.

It was agreed that this was to be followed by programmes that would have culminated in a dignified burial on Monday the 23rd of June.

By virtue of this positive development, we extended the mourning period by another 9 days, and we began to fulfil all of our commitments towards a state funeral with full honours.

Yesterday, June 18th, the people of Zambia were prepared to receive the remains of our former President but were surprised by the family’s reversal of the agreed course of action.

At our request, the South African Government prepared extensively, with military honours, mounted by the South African Defence Force, who did so in vain, as the former President’s body was not availed by the family for repatriation.

For this unfortunate situation, we extend our sincere apologies to President Ramaphosa, the Government, and the people of South Africa.

Fellow Citizens,

Our country cannot afford a state of indefinite mourning.

We have done everything possible to engage the family of our departed 6th Republican President, and we have reached a point where a clear decision has to be made.

Given these circumstances, I therefore wish to inform the nation, that as of the end of today the 19th of June 2025, this particular national mourning period is officially over.

This will allow the country to begin to return to some normalcy.

Mr Lungu was not only an ordinary citizen, but our 6th Republican President.

While we recognise that he belongs to a family, he also belongs to the nation of Zambia.

It is therefore correct that our 6th Republican President should be buried in Zambia with full honours, and not in any other nation.

In the meantime, we urge our citizens to maintain calm and orderliness.

As we have stated before, during this difficult time, no amount of lawlessness will be tolerated.

Let us remain united as a nation and maintain the peace we are known for.

In this spirit, we say to the Lungu family, and indeed the people of Zambia, our hearts remain with you.

Our doors, as Government, remain open for further engagement, as appropriate.

May the soul of our departed former republican president, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, rest in eternal peace.

May God bless you all.

May God bless Zambia.

I thank you.

Hakainde Hichilema
President of the Republic of Zambia

Zesco begins installation of diesel generators in Lusaka markets

ZESCO has commenced the installation of diesel-powered generators in key markets across Lusaka as part of the government's immediate response to the ongoing energy crisis.

The installations began today at Soweto Market, Nyumba Yanga, and Chilenje Market, aiming to ensure a continuous power supply to essential services despite the current power shortages.

This move follows the arrival of nine out of the 23 diesel generators ordered by the government.

The generators are intended to serve as a short-term solution to the power challenges facing the country.

The Ministry of Energy's Permanent Secretary, Peter Mumba, made the announcement on Friday, 30 August 2024, confirming the arrival of the first batch.

"Citizens may wish to note that the first consignment of nine out of twenty-three diesel generators procured have now arrived in the country, while the remaining fourteen are expected to arrive in the coming week," Mumba stated.

Mumba further outlined the installation schedule, stating that the nine generators received so far would be installed throughout the week, starting with two units each at Chilenje and Nyumba Yanga markets and an additional two at Soweto Market.

The installation of all 23 generators is expected to be completed by September 30 2024.

July 24, 2024-Woodlands Police Station today, July 24, 2024, at approximately 10:30 hours received a report via a phone call from a concerned member of the public in the Njolwe area. Who reported that during the night of July 23, 2024, at around 20:00 hours, he observed a vehicle, which he assumed to be a Pajero, with its doors open. Shortly thereafter, he heard two gunshots.

Two bullet cartridges were recovered at the scene.

An identity card was found in the pocket of the victim’s trousers, bearing the name D.M. Guntilla Muleya, Director General of the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA).

Borrowed Post

Lusaka police officer walks into a butchery in chelstone small Market just before closing time and asks, "Do you still have chicken?"

The butcher opens his deep freezer, takes out the only chicken left, and puts it on the scale. It weighs 1.5 kg. The officer looks at the chicken and the scale, then asks, "Do you have one that's a bit bigger than this one?"

The butcher puts the chicken back into the freezer and then takes it out again. This time, he craftily keeps his thumb on the scale pan, making it show 2 kg.

"That's wonderful," says the police officer. "I'll take both chickens, please!"

In a situation like this, you realize that your integrity and your reputation are on the line. Your wisdom becomes foolishness, and your cunning ways become stupidity.

As I write this, the butcher's head is still inside the deep freezer, looking for the first chicken.

Remember: always tell the truth, and you will be free! A good name is better than riches. Live to express yourself truthfully, not to impress others.

MONETARY POLICY RATE ADJUSTMENT EXPLAINED

The recent increase in the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) from 12.5 percent to 13.5 percent by the Bank of Zambia (BOZ) points to tightening of monetary policy. Here are some implications of such a move:

1. Increased Cost of Borrowing

Banks typically adjust their interest rates in line with changes in the MPR. An increase in the MPR leads to higher borrowing costs for consumers and businesses. This can discourage borrowing and reduce spending and investment in the economy.

2. Reduced Money Supply

By increasing the MPR, the central bank aims to reduce the money supply in the economy. This can help control inflation by limiting excess liquidity that could fuel price increases.

3. Impact on Investment

Higher interest rates can make borrowing for investment more expensive, potentially leading to a decrease in investment spending by businesses. This could have a negative impact on economic growth in the short term.

4. Exchange Rate Effects

A higher MPR can attract foreign capital seeking higher returns, which could strengthen the country's currency. On the other hand, a stronger currency can negatively impact exports by making them more expensive for foreign buyers.

5. Inflation Control

One of the primary goals of increasing the MPR is to control inflation. By reducing the money supply and increasing borrowing costs, the central bank aims to curb inflationary pressures in the economy.

6. Impact on Consumers

Higher interest rates can lead to increased costs for consumers with variable-rate loans, such as mortgages or credit cards. This can reduce disposable income and potentially lower consumer spending.

Overall, the decision to increase the MPR by the Bank of Zambia is aimed at managing inflationary pressures and maintaining economic stability. However, it may also have various effects on borrowing costs, investment, exchange rates, inflation, and consumer spending in the economy.
