Here's some perspective.

Anne Frank & Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. were born in 1929.

Viola Fletcher, who just died this week, was already 15 years old when they were born. Yet while we were just with Ms. Fletcher days ago, those two icons are portrayed as ancient history. The ideals they fought for weren't in some distant past—they're a contemporary reality we must continue to fight for today.

Remember, "The past is never dead. It's not even past.”

Some advice to the 17 year-old in this photo…

1) You might not know how to say “no” yet, but start observing folks who have more control and autonomy over their bodies NOW.

2) Theatre is the closest thing you have to therapy at the moment. And that’s a privilege. You’ve always found creative ways to cope with life but theatre will be your safe haven for a time… Be prepared for your priorities to change once the lessons learned in therapy reveal how much more you have to offer to this world creatively than theatre.

3) You go to a PWI- so you’re more prone to code switching yourself into exhaustion. Stick with your lunch group because the upcoming election is going to awaken your instincts and observations about racism, classism, and privilege more than Black History specials on the Disney Channel ever will.

4) You will “glow up” this year. Don’t let it get to your head. You’ll always continue to glow as long as you are helping others find their light as well. ☀️

MEET MORÉNIKÉ

Through the course of her life, Morenike was able to gain experience in the fields of modelling, singing and dancing. Partly due to a year at the “Instituto del Cine Canarias” a film school in the Canary Islands, or due to extracurricular activities (dancing classes, choir, painting...)
After finishing the scholar education in Gran Canaria, she moved to Germany to attend the Schauspielschule Artrium Hamburg, where she is training to this day.

On TSAM’s latest episode, J.Mix is across the Atlantic Ocean at the International Black Theatre Summit in Accra, Ghana, and sits down with Morenike to reflect on the diversities and adversities of her background as a multi-disciplined artist with African and European roots. Topics discussed include reflections on their IBTS experience, making “creative babies”, the importance of ancestral intelligence, challenges of multicultural identities, and maintaining cross-cultural connections between artists from different parts of the world.

Felt compelled to share this here because there’s not enough empathy going around right now.

It’s hard to humanize someone that has done bad things. But it’s needed now more than ever in order to break the cycle.

✍🏽 (thank you.)
