*SOMALIA JOINS EAST AFRICAN COMMUNITY*

The *East African Community (EAC)* Summit of Heads of State has admitted the Federal Republic of Somalia to the regional bloc, making it its 8th member country.
The decision was reached during the 23rd Ordinary Summit of the EAC Heads of State which took place on November 24, in Arusha, Tanzania - the headquarters of the bloc.
According to information shared by the EAC Secretariat, in accordance with Article 3 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC, which provides, among others, that any country granted membership to the Community can be one of its Partner States.
The Federal Republic of Somalia made its application to join the EAC in 2012. Since its application, the matter remained pending due to various reasons, according to the EAC Secretariat.
"The Somali people are honored to be part of the EAC! This is a beacon of hope for us. Hope for a future of opportunities and prosperity for Somalia, through regional integration!," Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the President of Somalia, said as he welcomed the news.
The Secretariat indicated that EAC officially launched the verification mission to assess the Federal Republic of Somalia's readiness to join the Community, on January 25, 2023.
Speaking at the launch of that mission, EAC Secretary General Peter Mathuki said "Somalia has the longest national coastline of over 3,000 kilometers in Africa, linking Africa to the Arabian Peninsula, which the region will tap into to increase intra-regional trade."
According to information from EAC, Somalia shares borders with one EAC Partner State, namely Kenya, and has strong historical, linguistic, economic and socio-cultural links with all the EAC Partner States.

Breaking news: With results in from more than 85% of polling stations in Liberia's run-off election, opposition candidate Joseph Boakai is slightly ahead of President George Weah.

Mr Boakai so far has 50.6% of the vote, while Mr Weah is on 49.4%, the election commission says.

The two were separated by just over 7,000 votes in the first round in October, triggering Tuesday's run-off.

A former international football star, Mr Weah, 57, is seeking a second term.

He became president after comfortably defeating Mr Boakai, 78, in a run-off in 2017.

Mr Boakai served as vice-president in the government of Nobel Peace laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who stepped down as Liberia's leader after the 2017 election.

The latest results from Tuesday's run-off come after votes from just over 5,000 of the 5,890 polling stations have been collated.

It is unclear when the final result will be out. The election commission has 15 days from polling day of announce it.

In the first round, Mr Weah got 43.8% of the vote and Mr Boakai 43.4% - both falling short of the 50% threshold required to be declared president.

The third placed candidate secured only about 2% of the vote.

The poll was the tightest presidential contest in Liberia since a civil war ended about two decades ago.

A run-off was predicted, but Mr Boakai did better than expected.

Mr Boakai's campaigning has focused on the need to rescue the nation from what he calls "mismanagement" by Mr Weah's administration.

The president dismissed Mr Boakai's allegations, saying that he has made significant strides, including introducing free tuition for university students.

This is the fourth time a presidential election has taken place in Liberia since a civil war ended more than 20 years ago.

Observers from the regional bloc, Ecowas, said the run-off was largely peaceful, AFP news agency reports.

Ghanaian blogger Sammy Kay has been arrested and handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for publishing sexually explicit images and the unlawful use of images of a Cyber Security Authority official.

Last week, a sexually explicit video of socialite Abena Korkor was circulated online.

Responding, Abena Korkor accused two people of being behind the sexually explicit video she was seen in and claimed she sent it to only two people.

Abena Korkor mentioned that one of the said people she suspected for circulating her video was a security official linked to the cyber crime office at the Ghana Police Service.

On Wednesday morning (Nov 15, 2023) another sexually explicit video was circulated on social media with the tagging that, it was in reference to the said security officer that Abena mentioned.

It is based on this that Sammy Kay also reportedly published the said images and linked it to some images of the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) official.
