🐣 New insights from early-life strategies to improve laying hen welfare!

We’re proud to share the work of Saskia Kliphuis (Utrecht University), whose thesis was developed within the EU Horizon2020 project PPILOW .

📘 Titled “Light and Larvae for Little Layers: Early-life strategies to improve welfare of laying hens on low-input and organic farms,” the thesis explores how small early-life changes—like exposing chicks to a light-dark cycle during incubation or providing live insect larvae as foraging enrichment—can have a meaningful impact on chicken behavior and stress resilience.

"Welfare issues identified by key informants in low-input outdoor
and organic pig and poultry production systems" 🐷🐔🌿

In four countries (Italy, Finland, France, United Kingdom), interviews were carried out with eleven key-informants working within the supply chain of low-input or organic production of poultry meat, eggs and pork meat (farmers, vets, companies producing progeny, feed producers, health inspectors in slaughter houses or egg packing company’s experts, NGOs). The objective was to understand the major issues in welfare in such productions according to on-field practitioners.
