Heartache for Alfie Hewett after defeat in first Wimbledon singles final

It was a case of so close, yet so far for Norfolk's Alfie Hewett in his first Wimbledon singles final.

The Cantley tennis ace served for the championship four times during a gruelling match with World Number One Shingo Kunieda in the wheelchair singles final in SW19.

However, after three hours and 20 minutes of intense competition, it was the Japanese ace who came away with his 28th grand slam triumph - and first in the spiritual home of tennis.

Emma Raducanu wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year award but misses ceremony after positive COVID test

The teenager's US Open win - in which she didn't lose a set - catapulted her to fame and made her one of the sport's most marketable stars.

US Open winner Emma Raducanu has won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

The 19-year-old from Bromley beat Olympic diver Tom Daley and swimming star Adam Peaty into second and third in the public vote.

Her remarkable run as a qualifier to become Britain's first female grand slam winner since 1977 made her the strong favourite.

Raducanu gave her speech from self-isolation after testing positive for COVID last week while in Abu Dhabi for a tournament.

She said it was "such an honour just to be among these nominees".

"Thanks to all the fans and voters, this year has been insane," she added. "The energy this year playing at Wimbledon in front of my home crowd, that was something I've never felt before."

Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli to open Dubai tennis academy
She revealed she has been living in the Emirate since she retired in 2013
36-year-old Bartoli, who won the 2013 Wimbledon championships and retired that same year, also made the move to Dubai back then.

“I absolutely love this place and will never think about living elsewhere in the world,” said Bartoli. “I recommend to everyone to come here and discover this beautiful city.

“I love Dubai because it is a very safe place and it has beautiful weather all year long. I just love to sit on the beach and think about my life and what I want to do,” she added.

She announced plans to open an academy during a visit to Dubai Sports Council, where she was received by Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, and Nasser Aman Al Rahma, Assistant Secretary General of the Council.

Top seed Elina Svitolina could begin her bid for a third Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships crown against former two-time Grand Slam winner and three-time Dubai finalist Svetlana Kuznetsova as play gets underway at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium this week.

The 2017 and 2018 champion receives a first round bye, and will then face either Kuznetsova or Qiang Wang. And should she progress to the quarter-finals, Svitolina could then find 2019 winner and number six seed Belinda Bencic in her path.
