strawberry seed girl

Written by Alina Siwy

“Writing has been a way for me to explore how I’m feeling. I wrote this piece about how it feels when you can’t choose a label because nothing fits quite right. Growing up, I never liked feeling like I was stuck being defined by certain terms for the rest of my life. To me, love is too fluid and
complicated to be defined. It’s as simple for me as picking which fruits to eat; hence, the metaphor of the strawberry seed girl was born. Why would you want to only eat one fruit for the rest of your life?”

I Get Good Grades, I Go to Church, I’m a Cheerleader!

Written by Mya Gallant

“When you’ve grown up with a wild imagination, it can be difficult to abandon the age-old habit of constantly making things up. It’s not lying — it’s simply a practice of one’s creative liberty. Rediscovering my childhood journals, I realized that whenever I wrote as a teenager, I rarely ever wrote about myself honestly. “I Get Good Grades! I Go to Church! I’m a Cheerleader!” is a reflection on using reinvention as a tool for avoidance, and learning to live authentically by becoming the version of myself I always avoided in my writing”

What Was Carried (For Those Who Remember)

Written by Safowan Mostaque

“What Was Carried (For Those Who Remember)” is a tribute to 2SLGBTQ+ histories, to those who lived in hiding, who loved in silence, who resisted in shadows. It honors the lives lost to systemic violence and the AIDS crisis, the grief that became protest, and the joy reclaimed through survival. This poem remembers a past that still lives in our bones and recognizes that joy, for many, is a light forged through hardship and resistance”

MUSE AAPI Week is finishing strong with an article by Kai Ronceria!

Recalling his experience shooting his first short documentary film, Kai shares his visit to PodoNamu, a staple restaurant of the Kingston community. What starts off as a simple interview becomes a touching story of strength, love, and the bond between mom and daughter.

To read Kai’s article, head over to MUSE’s Lifestyle section, and to visit PodoNamu, head over to 264 Princess Street!

We’re kicking off MUSE AAPI Week with a poem by our own Safowan Mostaque!

“Between Spices and Skylines is a reflection of my own experience growing up South Asian in spaces that often didn’t speak my language, both literally and emotionally. It captures the quiet work of translating grief, pride, and memory across generations. For AAPI Heritage Month, I wanted to honour the inbetween: the small embarrassments, the inherited dreams, the beauty in never fully fitting in. This poem is my way of saying I carry it all. It’s a reflection of the bridge I walk between cultures; never half, always whole.”

MUSE will be celebrating Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Week this May! Join us in honoring the vibrant contributions and influences of creatives with Asian and Pacific Islander heritages. Through this special week featuring written work, visual art, and community spotlights, MUSE is excited to honor the rich cultures and histories of Asian and Pacific Islander communities, as we welcome them into ours here at MUSE Online.

From May 9th to 17th, we will be accepting submissions celebrating AAPI Heritage!

MUSE delivers content that is authentic, creative, and honest. We seek pieces that are “current” – ones that speak on topics by pushing the boundaries of previous discussions and offering fresh discourse. The MUSE voice reflects passion. MUSE is a place where articles feel conversational and human — we encourage our writers to speak on their experiences and be vulnerable through their writing.

Yours Creatively,
MUSE Online
