People ask me all the time which People Business Podcast episode is my favorite.

While I have interviewed amazing and intelligent people and learned more than I could have hoped, my favorite part of hosting the podcast the last 4.5 years has been the opportunity to interview my parents 👪 on the lessons they've learned from their careers.

Today marks my 200th episode and to celebrate 🎉 I invited my mom, Gretchen McMahon, to the show.

While my dad (episode 100) has stayed steady and consistent in his career as a car dealer, my mom has reinvented herself numerous times, from horseback rider 🏇 to announcer 🎙️ to belt maker and entrepreneur 🧵 to professional photographer 📷, all while raising three rowdy boys 👦👦👦.

This episode is a testament to the benefits of being insatiably curious and constantly improving at everything you do. In a world where we try to plot every step of our journey, this is a lesson in following your passions (something she has instilled in me).

Love you mom ❤️!

Gretchen McMahon has had a wide and varied career as a horse show announcer, needlepoint belt maker, and sports photographer, all while raising her three boys full-time (one of whom happens to host this podcast). For our 200th episode, please welcome O’Brien’s mom to the show. In this conversati...

What can we learn from horses 🐴🐴🐴?

A lot, apparently.

Like how to regulate our energy, share leadership for the good of the group, and be clear in our intentions and focus.

Carrie O’Neill is the owner of , an facility that provides individual and group coaching and teambuilding.

She joins People Business to talk about the lessons we can learn from observing horses.

And from having horses observe us (her stories are mindblowing 🤯).

This was a fun yet surprisingly deep and thoughtful conversation. Check it out below or wherever you get your podcasts.

Kids these days...

Each generation laments the next. As an older , I had to listen to over a decade of complaints about entitlement, low work ethic, and a lack of professional skills.

Now that has entered the workforce it's their turn as the punching bag.

But when we look at the data, many of these generational issues and preferences don't hold water. Some can be chalked up to age or life stage, others reflect broad societal changes.

Cheryl Fields Tyler is an expert on this data. Her company, Blue Beyond Consulting, recently released an updated study on generational preferences and there are some fascinating insights.

She joins the People Business Podcast to break those down and share ways companies can adjust to meet these evolving needs.

"I don't trust you."

It's a hard thing to say to another person. I know because I said it to someone close to me several months ago and I could see how much it hurt them.

I didn't want to hurt them. And it wasn't that I didn't trust them at all. is a hard thing to pin down.

My problem was, I didn't have the words to articulate what I was feeling and the best way I could describe it was "I don't trust you."

I wish I had been introduced to Charles Feltman and read his book earlier because after reading only a few pages I grabbed my phone and called the aforementioned person. "I do trust you," I said. "My problem is really around reliability."

Reliability is one of the four components of trust and, in my case, that clarification made a lot more sense to the person. They had missed on several commitments recently. This subtle reframe helped us move through the painful emotions and get to a more productive place.

Charles joins the People Business Podcast this week to share the four components of trust and the ways we can all discuss trust more productively. He outlines what it is, how to talk about it, and what to do when you break it.

His book and this short conversation have totally transformed how I think about trust. Check it out below or wherever you get your podcasts.

does not have the best reputation when it comes to the human side of work.

That's why I was so excited to bring John Block onto the People Business Podcast and learn more about Unity Partners.

John and the Unity team lead with a principles-based approach that starts with their mantra - they invest in businesses that do well when employees do well.

They have laid out a simple and clear that serves as the operating system and common language everyone in the organization uses, allowing them to find alignment and move quickly. If you've listened to the podcast before, you know that this is exactly why I'm a fan of finding - and using - good frameworks.

A is a combination of two things that creates a distinct third thing.

Given that definition, is really hybrid?

Wayne Turmel joins People Business to talk about the current state of remote and hybrid work, where we are getting it right, and where the opportunities still exist.

One thing I’ve learned from the podcast is that leadership is a skill. Or rather, a combination of skills. Leading remote or hybrid teams only adds to the list of skills needed to succeed.

What skills are you honing?

Wayne Turmel has been writing about how to develop communication and leadership skills for almost 30 years. He has taught and consulted at Fortune 500 companies and startups around the world. For the last 18 years, he’s focused on the growing need to communicate effectively in remote and virtual e...

A key theme that keeps coming on the People Business Podcast...

You have to .

We are best when we periodically slow down, evaluate, set our intentions, practice new skills, and put a plan in place.

Easier said than done. Many people, when asked if they are leading themselves, don't have any idea how to respond. What does that even mean and where would they start?

Elizabeth Lotardo is here for those people (and the rest of us), with her new book Leading Yourself: Find More Joy, Meaning, and Opportunities in the Job You Already Have (Despite Imperfect Bosses, Weird Economies, Lethargic Coworkers, Annoying Systems, and Too Many Deliverables).

Elizabeth returns to the podcast to discuss this important topic and offer listeners a starting point to be more intentional with their time and energy.

Every company is trying to solve two problems when it comes to .

1. Lower the cost.
2. Improve the experience.

If you've worked in or around in any capacity, you know these are harder challenges than they seem.

were created to coordinate care but proved too rigid for most people.

came along to get more people engaged in their care decisions but it quickly became apparent that healthcare is not a consumer market.

Today we have targeting specific conditions and disease states. Many of these have a positive impact but the proliferation of vendors has made the concept hard to navigate for employees.

Healthcare is one trend that seems to be breaking through, largely because it addresses both problems above.

Navigation aims to direct individuals to the right care at the right time, lowering cost by removing waste while enhancing the experience by getting people through the system to better outcomes faster and with support along the way.

That's why I was excited to have Justin Holland join me on the People Business to share how he and his company, HealthJoy, are moving the needle.

Check out our conversation below to take a deeper dive into healthcare navigation and the challenges and insights Justin's team has experienced.

We humans are terrible at planning for the future.

The future is vague and uncertain whereas the here and now is very real and requires immediate attention (likewise, today's rewards are much more appealing than tomorrow's).

This is one of the reasons we have a crisis in the United States.

While don't get the same level of attention as other components of they are an important part of the mix. And when designing retirement plans, there's a lot a company can do to help employees better navigate their financial future.

Fred Rutler is a retirement expert with Creative Planning who has spent his career helping companies think through these challenges and navigate the complexities of the , , and world.

Fred joins the People Business Podcast to share important considerations for companies offering these programs, like how to (1) navigate their fiduciary liability, (2) build a meaningful investment lineup, and (3) support employees through their financial lives.

Can your see the scoreboard?

Do they know the plays?

Heck, do they even know what game they're playing?

Reaching these employees with key messaging can be a challenge, especially in a environment. But just because it's hard doesn't mean it's not important.

Jason Anthoine is an expert at this type of messaging and he joins People Business to share his wisdom and insights and help leaders better connect with their people.

🏆 How do you win 22 championships in a row? 🏆

.

And not just any culture but a culture.

Rusty Komori was the head tennis coach 🎾 at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii for 22 years. During that time he went a perfect 22-for-22, winning the men’s state title every year.

Now an author and speaker on a mission to help a broader audience perform at their best, Rusty joins People Business to share the mindset and culture he used to produce these incredible results (he has the record for state championships in any spot).

As you’ll hear, Rusty is a beacon of positivity. At the same time, he is firmly rooted in his beliefs and willing to do the hard, uncomfortable work of holding his high standards.
