Repost:
Brandon Sanders, has always cut his own unique path. Born in Kansas City but spending his formative years in Compton, Brandon grew up in a musical household. He also honed his love of Jazz at the Kansas City jazz club, Casablanca, run by his grandmother.

Now living in Brooklyn, Brandon has a third album titled “Lasting Impression,” on the heels of two critically acclaimed releases “Brandon Sanders: The Tables Will Turn,” and his first titled, “Compton’s Finest.”

In this episode, I talk with Brandon about his highly unusual backstory, remarkable career trajectory, and the forming of collaborations with a stellar list of jazz all-stars to create a path to his musical success.

From the early 1950s up until Anthony Jackson, there were plenty of incredible electric bassists. But for the most part, the instrument was used primarily in popular music and not always taken seriously by non-mainstream artists or listeners. In jazz especially, the electric bass was often approached with the same concept as the acoustic—it walked lines, held down familiar patterns, mostly because many of the early electric players were acoustic converts.

While Monk Montgomery and James Jamerson were the Milt Hinton and Jimmy Blanton of the electric bass, it was Anthony Jackson who truly got under the hood. He deeply explored both the artistic and mechanical possibilities of the instrument, forcing even jazz and classical musicians to consider it “legit.” When Horace Silver began using electric bass exclusively in the early ’70s, it was Jackson who brought dignity and integrity to an instrument too often dismissed as “for the kids.”

Mr. Jackson also plays a significant role in my world. Before he joined Horace Silver, and while he was one of Gamble and Huff’s go-to guys, he was holding down the bass chair with Billy Paul. And guess who stepped into that gig after him? My dad, Lee Smith. 😊 My father used to laugh about those first weeks: “Billy would constantly say, “Well, you know, Anthony would’ve played it like this…” or “Anthony would’ve done it like that…” Eventually my dad said whatever he had to say to make Billy stop—and it worked. 😂

The first time I met Mr. Jackson at the Blue Note in the ’90s, after he played a blazing set with Michel Camilo, his first words to me were, “Christian! How’s Lee doing?” We sat down and he told me stories about those Billy Paul days. Then he started asking me questions that made me feel like I was talking to my father. I looked at my friend like, “Whoa—that got deep fast!” It was such a gift to speak with such a serious thinker. More importantly, it was a gift to listen to his serious thinking.

May Anthony Jackson rest in peace. 🕊️

Led by bassist John Clayton and drummer Jeff Hamilton, the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra’s sound is often described as being influenced by Ellington, Basie and Thad Jones.
