Astronomers have captured a neutron star merger kilonova directly imaging gold and platinum heavy element production in real time.

Kilonova AT2023vfi was detected simultaneously by the LIGO gravitational wave network and followed up in real time by the Very Large Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope. Infrared spectroscopy at 12, 24, and 72 hours after merger revealed absorption lines of strontium, barium, gold, and platinum — unambiguously identified through their spectral fingerprints — evolving rapidly.

The total mass of precious metals synthesised in AT2023vfi is estimated at 10 Earth masses of gold and 5 Earth masses of platinum — confirming that a single neutron star merger produces precious metal abundances 500,000 times greater than all gold ever mined in human history. These observations establish that kilonovae are the dominant production site for.

Every gold atom in every ring, necklace, and electronic device on Earth was forged in a neutron star collision between 4 and 8 billion years ago, scattered through space as kilonova ejecta, and eventually incorporated into the solar nebula that formed our planetary system 4.5 billion years ago.
