Stresa in Piedmont, on the West side of Lake Maggiore, marks the half way point between Turin and the Swiss Alps and is less touristy than nearby town of Bellagio on Lake Como. We spent a couple of relaxing nights here, visiting a couple of the islands, including Isola Bella, where in 1632 Carlo III of the House of Borromeo constructed a grand Palazzo in honour of his wife. There are half a dozen hotels on the lake Stresa, with the most interesting being the recently renovated Hotel La Palma, the main attraction of which is it's spectacular sky bar. Rooms overlooking the lake are well worth splashing out on. Hotel La Palma
