SOCIAL MEDIA ALGORITHM
An algorithm is a set of criteria or guidelines for solving a problem or completing a task. Each computing device uses algorithms to perform its functions.
A social network algorithm is a set of rules and data that sort posts on your social media stream by relevance to your interests rather than the order in which they were posted. . By default, social networking algorithms are in charge of choosing what content should be included in your Facebook content stream based on your behavioral history.
For example, when you have just 'liked' a post by a celebrity, the social network algorithm will put that person's posts, images, and videos in the "Explore" section of Instagram. Or when you get into the habit of commenting on your best friend's posts, these algorithms will add more of this person's behavior to your Facebook content stream.
Besides helping social network users easily connect with friends and relatives, the algorithm also contributes to the problems of information disturbance and the spread of fake news. For example, with the function of capturing user interest and filtering related content, algorithms have inadvertently created filter bubbles, pushing the reader into an echo chamber. ) with the backing of confirmation bias or a "post-truth" effect and make conspiracy theories or clickbait appear more believable to user.
