Dima Hasao, often referred to as the "Switzerland of the Northeast," is strategically positioning itself to harness its breathtaking landscapes as a magnet for tourists and to emerge as India's cleanest district. Formerly marred by militancy, this hill district in Assam is now dedicated to establishing itself as a serene and alluring tourist hub in the region.
On the occasion of World Tourism Day, the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC), governing Dima Hasao, introduced a draft tourism policy. This policy meticulously delineates plans for the creation of five distinct tourist circuits, addressing the dearth of tourism infrastructure and addressing previous security concerns.
Hen Samuel Changsan, the Chief Executive Member (in-charge) of NCHAC, elucidated that the policy faithfully reflects the aspirations of Dima Hasao's residents, especially those residing in rural areas, who eagerly anticipate the symbiotic growth of tourism and essential amenities. This district, grappling with elevated youth unemployment rates, discerns the untapped potential in its abundant natural resources.
Changsan emphasized that the policy is currently in draft form, awaiting approval during the council session. Dima Hasao envisions not only establishing its unique tourist circuits but also integrating seamlessly with Assam's broader tourism network. Haflong, the district's administrative center, nestled approximately 330 kilometers from Guwahati, stands as Assam's sole hill station.
In response to inquiries concerning the historical impact of militancy on tourism, Changsan stressed the paramount importance of peace as a prerequisite for development. He affirmed that Dima Hasao is currently a haven of tranquility, beckoning travelers to explore its beauty and offerings.
