An instrument called a mouth gag is commonly used in cats that are anesthetized for surgical/dental procedures. This instrument is used to prevent the patient from biting down on the endotracheal tube that is passed down the cat's trachea to deliver anesthetic gas and to provide access to the cat's oral cavity.

It has recently been reported that some cats that undergo these procedures are blind, usually temporarily so, when they wake up from anesthesia. Until recently, the cause of this blindness was unclear, but a new study by Feline Health Center-funded Cornell researchers sheds light on the mechanism of this unfortunate phenomenon.

It turns out that the extreme opening of the mouth that is induced by the spring loaded mouth gag results in blockage of blood flow through the maxillary artery, a major supplier of blood to the brain and eye of cats.

This phenomenon can be seen in the CAT scan images of the heads of two anesthetized cats that have had their mouths briefly opened maximally below. The arrows indicate regions of blocked blood flow through the maxillary arteries, which appear as white linear structures (they have been highlighted by the use of an innocuous injectable contrast agent).

These cats did not experience any harm as a result of this study, but this research provides valuable information to veterinarians...information that can be directly applied in the hospital to prevent cats from becoming blind during oral surgical procedures. Further research is ongoing and will form the basis for recommendations designed to decrease the likelihood of post-procedure blindness in cats.

On this week's episode of Aquadocs, host Michelle Greenfield interviews Dr. Amanda Ardente, veterinarian, nutritionist, and owner of Ardente Veterinary Nutrition about her work with aquatic and zoological nutrition. Dr. Ardente discusses the importance of nutrition in the care for animals in managed care facilities. A simple fix such as lowering the sugar content of a diet or serving whole fish instead of fish fillets could make a huge difference for an individual.

MIRACLE WORKERS. Kaleidoscope the pregnant cow arrived at the NC State Veterinary Hospital on Dec. 8 because her owners were expecting a difficult birth. When the cow went into labor early Dec. 15, Dr. Jennifer Halleran and Dr. Blanca Camacho easily delivered her calf, but Kaleidoscope's uterus pr*****ed, and she collapsed as the medical team was moving her. After performing CPR, Halleran called in the anesthesia team to stabilize her. Moving the cow from where she collapsed to where they could repair her uterus required using a forklift. ❤️ Today, Kaleidoscope and her calf went home. ❤️ That Kaleidoscope survived with no long-term complications shows yet again how we excel. Thank you to our ruminant health team, anesthesia team, students, staff and clinicians. 👏👏👏
