Good morning, Yellow Family!
I am Dr. Moses Bester, a football analyst, and in my column today, I would like to express my gratitude to Coach Miguel Cardoso for his astute approach to the game and the effective rotation of his squad, which has kept the players fresh.
Orlando Pirates is a formidable team that excels in both the CAF Champions League and the Premier Soccer League. Facing them is never an easy task, especially when they field skilled players like Tito Maswanganyi and Relebogile Mofokeng.
However, Jose Riveiro's decision to play Makhaula and Dlamini against a team like Mamelodi Sundowns, who typically employ three midfielders (Adams, Mokoena, and Allende), seemed perplexing. A more effective approach might have been to mirror Sundowns' midfield setup with players like Dlamin, Makhaula, and Philip Ndlondlo, creating a diamond formation to contest the midfield battle.
Mamelodi Sundowns showcased their class and quality, with Coach Cardoso making a technical change by selecting Lucas Suarez in the starting lineup ahead of Malibongwe Khoza. This decision proved to be a masterstroke, as Suarez's experience and skill were evident throughout the game.
Grant Kekana delivered another solid performance, while the Sundowns defense effectively neutralized Orlando Pirates' attacking threats, including Evidence Makgopa, Tito Maswanganyi, and Relebogile Mofokeng.
James Moreno and Modiba provided width to the attack, but also demonstrated their defensive awareness by tracking back to cover their positions.
The entire Sundowns team played with heart and determination, fighting for the badge. Lastly, Lucas Costa's individual brilliance was a standout feature, showcasing his exceptional skill and talent.
Well done, Mamelodi Sundowns!"
