[IN CONVERSATION] The global trade in counterfeit medicines, worth an estimated $30 billion annually, continues to pose a serious threat to public health, contributing to nearly one million deaths worldwide each year. Africa faces a dual challenge as both a major recipient and contributor to falsified drugs, prompting initiatives like Togo’s Lomé Initiative, which strengthens regulatory frameworks and raises grassroots awareness.
Through partnerships with the WHO, the African Union, and key global stakeholders, Togo’s approach offers a potential blueprint for other African nations, showing how coordinated action can save lives.
