The end of the year is a good time to pause and appreciate the people who make the work meaningful.

For us, that's you; the teachers showing up for your students every day, everyone who's trusted us to be part of your language programs this year.

We don't take that for granted.

However you're spending the holidays, we hope it's restful. See you in 2026!

Your students are already using AI. The question is whether they're using it to actually learn Spanish or just to get answers.

At EPENC 2026, Olivia Espejel will lead a workshop on designing tasks that put generative AI to work for real language learning. Olivia is a Spanish as a foreign language professor and teacher trainer at the University of Barcelona, where she focuses on how technology can support meaningful communication, not replace it.

This session is about your role as the mediator. How do you design activities where AI becomes a tool for critical thinking and creative production, not a shortcut? How do you build student autonomy while keeping the focus on authentic Spanish use?

You'll analyze specific task types and strategies you can bring back to your classroom and practical approaches for guiding students to use AI in ways that actually strengthen their communicative competence.

AI isn't going anywhere—so how do we use it well in Spanish class?

That's the question Rachelle Dené Poth will tackle at EPENC 2026. Rachelle is a Spanish and STEAM teacher, author, and international speaker who's been working at the intersection of language teaching and emerging technology for years. This isn't a session about chasing trends—it's about figuring out which digital tools and AI applications actually help students communicate, create, and engage with Spanish.

You'll walk away with strategies for integrating tech that strengthens comprehension and production, plus ideas for designing learning experiences that feel personalized without adding hours to your prep time.

Whether you're AI-curious or AI-skeptical, this session will give you something concrete to work with.

You want students to read authentic German literature. But there's a massive gap between "Wie geht's?" and actual novels.

Your Novice High to Intermediate Low students open a page of Schiller or Keller, see dense paragraphs, and lose focus immediately.

LITERATUR-COMIC DaF bridges that gap.

Classic German works as engaging comics designed for intermediate learners:

Wilhelm Tell (Schiller) - Freedom fighter in 14th-century Switzerland. Interactive story choices, expressive panels, zero dramatic monologues to decode.

Kleider machen Leute (Keller) - Poor tailor mistaken for a nobleman. Students laugh, discuss identity and class, and actually understand the plot.

Each includes: audiobooks, Comic-Videos, comprehension exercises, author bios. Built for Novice Low to Intermediate Low learners who deserve authentic literature in an accessible format.

What German classic would you want to see as a comic next?

Communicative Language Teaching has been the research-backed standard for decades — but most U.S. materials still lean on decontextualized drills and predictable exercises.

Our latest white paper, written by Dr. Liliana Paredes of Duke University, explores what real communicative instruction looks like and how Task-Based and Project-Based Learning frameworks bring it to life — with classroom examples from all four of the main world languages.

Students don't become proficient by accident. They need clear milestones that show them exactly where they're going and how they'll know when they get there.

That's where Can-Do statements come in.

"I can introduce myself and ask someone their name." "I can describe my daily routine using present tense verbs." "I can express opinions about current events and support them with evidence."

Instead of a list of boxes to check, Can-Do statements are roadmaps. They tell students what proficiency actually looks like at each level and give them concrete goals to work toward.
Without them, students are left guessing. With them, they have clarity and a sense of direction in your class. They know what progress means today and what it should look like next month.

Because of this, we work Can-Do statements into every unit of our Reporters series. Students can track their progress, take pride in what they've mastered, and see exactly what's next on their path to proficiency.

Proficiency isn't mysterious. It's a series of small, achievable "can-dos" that build on each other over time.

How do you use Can-Do statements to guide your students toward proficiency?
