Yes, you're teaching Spanish vocabulary, but are you really teaching Spanish?

Language and culture can't be separated–when you teach colors without cultural context, students miss the real meaning.

Carmen Reyes shares how to integrate culture naturally: connect your topic to Hispanic culture.

Teaching colors? Explore Frida Kahlo's art or alebrijes. Teaching food? Show breakfast across Spanish-speaking countries.

Also, don't just show cultural elements - let students create them. Have kids make their own alebrije and learn the tradition behind it.

Use comparisons to spark critical thinking. Photos, drawings, or Venn diagrams can help students see cultural connections.

When students understand the culture behind the language, lessons stick better and mean more.

Alba y Gael includes cultural resources for each theme, making integration seamless.

How do you bring Hispanic culture into your lessons?

IPAs shift the focus from what students get wrong to what they can actually do with language. Unlike traditional tests, they assess functional language use across interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes.

The approach connects classroom learning to real-world communication while providing clear data on proficiency development. Whether you're exploring proficiency-based assessment or looking to strengthen your current practices, IPAs offer a framework grounded in ACTFL research.

Many teachers find that IPAs help students become more aware of their own language growth. The feedback process helps learners reflect on their progress along the proficiency path, building self-assessment skills that extend beyond the classroom. This ownership of learning often leads to increased motivation and more intentional language practice.

DAS REPORTERTEAM is 100% proficiency-based!

That means students always know where they stand in their learning journey. If they don’t know where they are, they can’t measure growth or see what to work on next—so DAS REPORTERTEAM makes this crystal clear.

• At the start of each unit, we outline what students will be able to do by the end.

• Each lesson begins with communicative, language, and cultural goals plus a Mini-Projekt that builds toward the final Abschlussprojekt.

• Every spread includes a can-do statement, so learners never lose track of their progress.

• Grammar and vocabulary are introduced in context—always connected to communication.

• Assessments follow the IPA model: formative Test IPAs prepare students for summative IPAs.

• At the end of the unit, students use the “My progress” self-evaluation worksheet to reflect on their growth.

With this structure, students aren’t just learning German—they’re building confidence and proficiency, step by step.

Your students can read Spanish words perfectly. So why don't they understand what they just read?

Because there's a huge difference between decoding letters and actually comprehending meaning.

Carmen Reyes shows the solution: guided reading that bridges that gap.

Model the reading first, then read together while building meaning. Use gestures, change your voice, pause to explain words in context.

Then ask simple questions that repeat the input naturally: "Does Mateo see a dolphin or an elephant?"

When students hear the same content multiple ways, comprehension clicks.

ALBA Y GAEL books make this easy with simple texts and visual supports designed for guided reading. Your students will finally understand what they're reading, not just sound out words.
