VAIN FW2024 at Copenhagen Fashion Week

From “social avoidance” to love, Jimi Vain’s collection for Fall/Winter 2024 was a dystopic dream of multi-cultural inspirations and contemporary silhouettes with a dash of optimism. On January 30th, 2024, Helsinki-based label, VAIN showed their “Married to the VAIN” collection at Copenhagen Fashion Week. Debuting items featured in the “VAIN Upcycled” product line, the label incorporates a wide range of deadstock materials similar to their Mcdonalds collaboration in 2022.
For those unfamiliar with VAIN, the label was founded by artist and Creative Director Jimi Vain and CEO Roope Reinola. VAIN's FW23 debut collection '02' was presented at Pitti Uomo 103 in January 2023. Although a young label, VAIN has carved out their own path to fashion. With witty commentary and subtle references, the brand’s contemporary approach to traditional story telling evokes a unique and refreshing take on the new digital era of artistry. Fixated on technocracy and it’s imposing threat to human connection, the brand frequently explores community through shared history and shared experiences, conveyed through up-cycling and re-imagining banal items like ID bracelets, lanyards, and safety pins. In their own words, “VAIN is all about love”.

Inner Rot and Beauty: A Conversation With Ophelia Arc
Words and photos by Victoria Bruno

Meet Ophelia Arc, a New York-based artist specializing in textiles and sculptures. In her unique artistic approach, Ophelia begins with the human body as her conceptual canvas, meticulously anatomizing it before subverting, corroding, and disrupting its familiar forms. Her fascination lies in creating a space for the illusion of self-perception within a body that has been intentionally distorted. For Ophelia, the intrigue lies in disrupting preconceived notions of the body. As she states, “So the idea of disrupting what we seem to think we know of the body is something that’s really interesting to me.” Having already explored the healing and self-reflective aspects of her craft, Ophelia’s work invites viewers to reconsider their understanding of the human form through a lens of abstraction and transformation.
On April 21st 2024, Ophelia Arc will have her well-deserved debut solo exhibition entitled “We’re Just So Glad You’re Home” at 81 Leonard Gallery in Tribeca, New York City. This solo exhibition will be curated by Nakai Falcón.

Jill’s artistic odyssey begins with the strokes of a painter’s brush, where her canvas was a realm of nature’s raw beauty and the ceaseless growth that graces our planet. Hailing from the coastal enclave of Carmel, California, Jill’s art has always carried the deep imprints of the ocean and an enduring fascination with the wonders of the natural world.

One of the most captivating facets of Jill’s work is her ability to transcend mere brush strokes on canvas and delve deep into the abstract tapestry of landscapes. Her connection with the awe-inspiring vistas of the Four Corners region is palpable in her artwork. With an unshakable appreciation for the majestic landforms, Jill seeks to capture the essence of growth, mirroring the organic evolution of life in these boundless fields.

Jill Viney’s artistic exploration extends to the realms of human relationships. Her “Environments,” characterized by intricate balsa wood box installations, delve into the complexities that define the connections between individuals. Jill’s boxes delve into the multifaceted challenges faced by women, addressing the juggling act of motherhood, domestic responsibilities, and the nuanced undertones of sexuality. Additionally, the universal tension between familial bonds and personal freedom reminds us that, at any age, individuals grapple with the shifting importance of close relationships.

Later in life, Jill’s voyage took her to explore the rich tapestry of folklore from around the world. Her production methods underwent a transformation, reflecting her ever-evolving creative spirit. Inspired by a recent voyage to India, where she was immersed in compelling folk art, she’s now weaving these impressions into her creative vision.

Join us at her gallery showing, where her art transcends boundaries and beckons you to explore the evolving magic of her creative spirit. This showing will be available until December 9th. For more information on Jill Viney and her art, please visit https://www.jillviney.com/

PREVIEW:

"As expected, party dresses played a significant role in the Herrera collection. However, this season, embellishments took a backseat to focus on form. One standout piece was a black and lavender stripe micro pleated tulle ballgown that elegantly fanned out like a beach umbrella. Bustier dresses with micro pleated tulle cage skirts also made a statement. For eveningwear, column gowns and pencil skirt and bustier sets were offered as options.

It may seem contradictory to pare back the extravagant elements associated with the Herrera brand, known for its ruffles and roses. However, Carolina Herrera herself has always embodied sharpness and discipline in her personal style, which was evident as she sat in the front row during the show, perfectly put together." - Mira

“Each season we encounter adds a new take to our story! I have learned that when observing what is closest to you for ideas, your work becomes most convincing, personal and intimate. Sometimes glancing back into your very past is a productive process. One of this season’s focus was the work of my Great-Great grandfather Hermann von
Koenigsbrunn, an artist from Graz, Austria.

In the 1850s he embarked as a landscape painter on long expeditions to Egypt and Sri Lanka, where
he ended up staying for years. Also, Greece - especially Corfu- was one of his personal favourites,
hence the Greek coastlines and their flora becoming one of his recurring motifs. Nature, with its
shapes and hues - especially the architecture of trees - fascinated him exceptionally.

Shiny viscose and crispy popeline were printed with a mix-up of several paintings, while so! jersey
became a new base for a charcoal sketch of Sri Lankan palm trees.

Next to this meticulous and traditional way of painting, we brought in some purposely abstract
prints to represent our studio, a place of joyful experimentation: coloured tissue paper mixed with
glue and water or hundreds of imprints of a tiny sponge turned into two organic graphics, achie-
ving an emulation of tree trunk surfaces.

We hope a timeless feel in our work is present, freed from the aim to make collections of the now,
yet rather respectfully embracing the past while constantly developing a new, personal aesthetic.
It is a great privilege to be an independent brand in Milan, being free, creative and withstanding the
storm of fashion is a personal achievement. The rule for the future is to go intimate, go niche and
go smaller: compact, focused collections - which want to be chapters worth being written”.
