The Hidden History of Black Contributions to America

10/08/2025

Why East Saint Louis?

We chose East Saint Louis as the site for the National Reparations Solidarity Walk because it stands as a living testament to both the enduring legacy of systemic injustice and the unbreakable spirit of Black resilience.

East Saint Louis is more than a city—it is a symbol. It has been shaped by decades of disinvestment, environmental racism, and economic exclusion, yet it remains rich in culture, history, and community pride. From the 1917 race riots to the struggles of modern-day inequality, East Saint Louis has borne the weight of America’s broken promises—and still dares to dream of justice.

By walking here, we honor the lives and labor of generations who have endured and resisted. We bring national attention to a place that has too often been overlooked, and we affirm that reparations are not just about policy—they are about people, places, and healing.

East Saint Louis is not just a backdrop for this movement. It is the heartbeat.
