Parliament is in session!

Did you know that one of the terms for a group of owls is a parliament? We prefer the lesser known term "stare of owls". Like this group of juvenile barred owls awaiting their release date, they do a lot of staring.

While barred owls primarily hunt with their ears, they still have excellent vision, particularly at night. They have a ton of specialized photoreceptors called rods they use for excellent low-light sight and motion detection. The do have some cones, the receptors for colour vision, but not many and they see limited colours. Their eyes are massive! They are about the same size as human eyes, and they take up about a third of their head, which means all that light they let in is necessary to help their night hunting activities.

If our eyes were the same proportion, they would be grapefruit-sized and weight up to 250 grams each!

This beech floods every fall/winter-spring. Something new every time, beech changes and Cliff edges as well.
