Back in May, James Harrison, the director of the Kentucky Reptile Zoo, was bitten by a highly venomous Jameson’s Mamba while working.

He was given antivenom by two EMS workers.

Now, the first responders who helped administer that could lose their licenses.

They say the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services policy states that only wilderness paramedics are authorized to administer antivenom, and they will have a hearing on the matter next week.

This advertisement was published in the Mt. Sterling Advocate yesterday, August 14, 2025 and will be published again on Thursday, August 21, 2025. Because we don’t have a more local newspaper that publishes weekly, we want to be fully transparent about setting our tax rate so we are also advertising on social media. We have been accomplishing many items on our District Facility Plan, and we want to start to upgrade the athletic facilities. What is commonly termed “the nickel tax” generates $50 per $100,000 worth of property and has been matched by the legislature annually for several years. We will have a presentation prior to the tax hearing at two different times so you can hear more information about the tax rate and our facility plans. The first will be at the Board meeting this coming Tuesday, August 19. The meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. and will be held in the Middle School Library. The second presentation will be a community forum on Monday, August 25, 2025 at the High School cafeteria. The Board of Education will have a special called Board meeting on August 28th to have an official tax hearing and set the rate, but we want to give you an opportunity prior to the hearing to see what exciting things we have planned for the children in our community and ask any questions you may have.
