Your WVVC Weather Team is keeping you up to date...

Rain has already been in our region for a few hours, and the winds are beginning to pick up. We have some updated information from The National Weather Service in Binghamton, NY to pass along.

Rain has become widespread across the region. Once this batch of rain moves out late tonight, light lake effect rain and snow showers develop but end Thursday morning. Snow would be limited to the higher elevations but little to no accumulation is expected.

Our friends at The National Weather Service in Albany, NY have provided some additional information concerning the high winds, which are expected to arrive later tonight, following the passing of a cold front.

UPDATE [as of 135 PM EST]: A strong low pressure system and associated cold front will cross the region tonight into early Thursday morning, bringing strong to damaging winds across eastern New York and western New England. Sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 45 to 55 mph in the Advisory and gusts up to 60 mph in the Warning area will result in scattered tree and wire damage with subsequent power outages. Secure any loose outdoor objects.

The National Weather Service in Binghamton, NY has issued a High Wind Warning for parts of our listening area from 7pm Wednesday to 7am Thursday.

High Wind Watches have been upgraded to Wind Advisories for today, except for Southern Oneida, Otsego, and Delaware counties of NY, where High Wind Warnings have been issued. Strong west-northwesterly winds of 20 to 35 mph, with gusts of 45 to 60 mph, can be expected this afternoon through the overnight hours. Along with the strong winds, a line of showers and isolated severe storms are expected as a cold front moves through the area. If stronger storms develop, 60+ mph wind gusts will be possible.

* WHAT...West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected.

* WHERE...Delaware, Otsego, and Southern Oneida Counties.

* WHEN...From 7 PM this evening to 7 AM EST Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines.
Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult,
especially for high profile vehicles.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Highest winds will be in the early evening
between 7 pm to 10 pm with the frontal passage.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and
avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Use caution
if you must drive.

As another weather system pushes our way, it will bring high winds to much of our area, with the possibilityof severe storms. The National Weather Service in Binghamton, NY has provided some key information concerning this incoming system.

KDFJ

Strong winds and isolated severe thunderstorms will be possible tomorrow afternoon and evening as a strong cold front moves through the region. Wind gusts up to 60mph will be possible across much of the area, with stronger winds in thunderstorms. A High Wind Watch has been issued for 1pm tomorrow to 1pm Thursday. Given the strong wind shear expected with these possible storms, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Isolated stronger gusts above 60 mph are not
out of the question, especially within thunderstorms that are
expected to move through between 6 and 9 PM Wednesday.

We are above freezing this morning, and rain has moved into our region. The National Weather Service in Binghamton, NY has also shared that conditions will become windy, with the rain, for today, into tomorrow.

Much welcomed rain will fall throughout the day as a low pressure system moves into the area from the southwest. Gusty winds will accompany the rain, especially across higher elevations and along and east of I-81. If you have Halloween decorations outside, secure them before heading out or they might not be there when you get back!
