For over five decades the work of Walter Brueggemann has been the metronome for Old Testament studies, Old Testament theology, Biblical theology, and theological ethics. His passing today equally marks the passing of an era, an era of the Bible’s role in the church and in society, but also an era when one person could speak and scholars of every stripe and flavor would listen, clergy of every stripe and flavor would listen, and Christians of every stripe and flavor would listen. Brueggemann’s ability to speak was born of his discipline of reading—yes, the Bible, but everything else. He read several books every week, and did so every week for decades.

Joyous and serious, affirming yet prophetic, brilliant yet lucid—Brueggemann was generous. He shared his ideas with all faiths, and he published those ideas with many publishers, Fortress fortunate enough to be numbered among them. His Prophetic Imagination, now in its 40th Anniversary edition, is not only the book that changed the arc of Brueggemann’s career and was a harbinger of what was yet to come, but it has been a book that defined a press.

We join with our many colleagues in academe and in publishing in mourning his loss. We will continue to share remembrances and reflections from those who knew and loved Walter over the next few days.
