Come and join us here’s an update: Wales DMR Ragchew Net
So far the experimental EchoLink Bridge on TG2356 can TX/RX in Wales and beyond. Phoenix repeaters now can crossover on TG2356 and also GB7DP DMR repeater ran by Treffgarne repeater group is also monitoring TG2356, the dashboard is available here http://gb7dp.treffgarne.org/. This repeater is located in Pembroke via phoenix slot one in crossover. Fusion to DMR is available on most hotspots and eventually analogue for the guys without DMR or Fusion equipment. The increased traffic on TG2356 via EchoLink has been superb and is proving very popular and we welcome any reports or comments via the page. Thank you Simon Poyser for the use of MW0GSR-L temporary Bridge on EchoLink and to all the repeater groups and gateway hosts who link everybody with an EchoLink. Looking forward to a very busy Ragchew Net Saturday, let’s switch for weekend to Brandmeister TG2356. Due to the Nets popularity an extra net will be activated on TG2356 this coming Tuesday evening by a guest host Ethan 2W0PQU. The following weeks, the Tuesday night net will be hosted by different guest net controllers. Further information will be given over the next few days. Further thanks should be given to the team of W.D.R.N. – MW7JLM, 2W0OKW and MW0GSR.
From the bottom of my heart thank you for making this dream possible DE Chris MW7CCS.

Just passed foundation licence

So.....what now?

Congratulations, you’re now at a turning point of a new hobby and here’s a few pointers to get you started and some ideas.
Firstly: get your callsign – you will get your certificate from the RSGB and then either onto the OFCOM website to take a M7 call. (I think you can call OFCOM and possibly request a M7
Get reading: Get a copy of Practical Wireless or beg a copy of Radcom and get up to date with equipment. There are a few Amateur Radio groups on Facebook where you can get information but remember they will be full of resident ‘experts’ who will say ‘buy this, buy that...’ etc. Research, got to a few radio rallies (g4rga.org.uk is a good source of rally info).
VHF/UHF

2m/70cms: I consider it’s good to get yourself established on 2m and 70cm FM first from home – you’ll get a feel of what goes on locally, get access to a few repeaters (check out repeaterbook.com for info) and enjoy making some contacts. You can then consider SSB later on in the hobby.

Digital is getting more and more popular. DMR, D-Star, Fusion etc - All I can say is go onto Google and get reading about the different systems. Getting onto 2m and 70cm FM will let you chat to local operators and find out what is popular where you are – it’s hardly worth investing in Fusion is everyone locally is on DMR or vice versa?!

An external Dual Band VHF/UHF aerial isn’t overly expensive (use RG213 cable!) and all of the major manufacturers - Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood, Alinco retrivice tyt anytone - make good dual band radios.
If going 'classic transceiver’, ensure the radio has ctcss built in for repeater access.

You also have the Chinese ‘cheaper’ import models too if you want your budget to stretch – Anytone have made a ‘decent’ dual band and Wouxun/TYT Quad band seems popular. Remember – watch your power levels! Dual band handhelds are also worth the investment and, again, you have the Chinese imports (Baofeng, etc), if you want something to play with to start off for very little outlay.

It’s really a case of investing wisely once will save you spending again.

HF:
I’d honestly set up a Receive system first via a software defined radio – rtl-sdr.com is the best starting point and their USB dongle does a hell of a lot for little outlay with a simple wire aerial. If you want to move up a notch, the RSP1A is a great little SDR – just a black box with two connectors.

Transceiver wise – the sky (price-wise) is the limit.
You can pick up plenty of HF transceivers on the second hand market and also at rallies. I’d recommend purchasing from a dealer to start with to ensure you get a warranty. (Martin Lynch and son has a good reputation)

I’d recommend a ‘low-end’ set to start with – for example the modern Yaesu has a built in AutoATU and are selling at good second hand prices. Or a sdr radio like the xeigu sdr transceiver with morce decode antenna Analyzer and tuner and much more ultimate newbie radio Move up to ‘all bells and whistles’ radios in time.
(There are bargains to be had on places like Facebook)

Aerials: Where to start – dipole, vertical, etc. I can’t recommend as every home is different. Be safe with whatever you choose to use and remember ladder safety.

A Diamond Sqbm or x30 2m & 70cm vertical or the Triband V2000 are often popular aerials to start out on VHF/UHF.

As for HF aerials – why not make one? Lots of details out there on the web – the G7FEK aerial is a great thing to build or simple dipoles or verticals.

Accessories: A decent power supply capable of 25Amps at 13.8VDC, a SWR meter that covers HF/VHF/UHF, Antenna analyser (expensive but worth the investment), a multimeter, cutters, soldering iron, lots of coax and plugs. Again go to a rally for accessories to get decent deals.

Most of all – good luck – consider doing the Intermediate and Full Licences and have fun with Amateur Radio!

See you on the air as on the wales Dmr ragchew net – MW7CCS
