We’ve just discovered the ‘Fish Doorbell’ in our house and the kids are obsessed with it already. There’s a canal lock in Utrecht in The Netherlands where local ecologists were concerned about migrating fish getting eaten by predators because loads of them were getting stuck at the gate - they came up with the perfect solution.
They installed an underwater we**am that is running 24/7, and whenever viewers all over the world spot a fish they can ring a doorbell that tells the lock keeper that they need to open the gate and let them through. Whenever you ring the bell there is also a chart asking you to identify the species of fish, and so at the same time they are gathering vital data.
To avoid disappointment, the best times to spot fish are dawn and dusk, but apparently if you want to try and see an eel or zander then your best chance is at night. As a guide, we went on there just before 8am today and saw a few bigg’uns as well as a couple of schools of tiddlers.
