Chinese smartphone manufacturers are working on new phones that will feature both under-display front cameras and advanced 3D facial recognition, a combination that has not yet appeared in commercial devices. The goal is to create a more seamless and secure user experience, potentially challenging Apple’s Face ID technology. According to industry sources, these features are being tested on Android devices, aiming for full 3D face scanning without any visible camera cutouts.

While companies like ZTE and Honor have each experimented with under-display cameras and 3D face recognition separately, they have not yet combined them in a single device. For example, Honor’s Magic 7 Pro includes 3D face recognition, while ZTE’s nubia phones offer under-display selfie cameras. However, integrating both technologies at once presents technical challenges, such as hiding the necessary sensors under the display and ensuring high image quality.

It remains to be seen when these innovations will reach the market, but they mark an important step toward the next generation of smartphone security and design.

Elon Musk’s xAI has landed a $200 million Pentagon contract and unveiled “Grok for Government,” giving all U.S. federal agencies access to its AI tools via the GSA schedule. This move puts xAI in direct competition with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in Pentagon AI partnerships.

The deal comes as Grok faces criticism for bias, including generating content influenced by Musk’s X posts and antisemitic outputs. Meanwhile, SpaceX has invested $2 billion in xAI, nearly half of its recent $5 billion funding round.

Meta has acquired Play AI, a voice technology startup known for creating ultra-realistic AI-generated speech. Financial details weren’t revealed, but Meta confirmed the Play AI team will join them soon.

Play AI’s tech, including its PlayDialog voice model with emotional and multilingual capabilities, fits Meta’s plans for AI across platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, wearables, and AI assistants. This move strengthens Meta’s push to develop natural, expressive voice interfaces and could rival Siri.

The team will report to Johan Schalkwyk, a former Google voice tech expert.

Elon Musk’s AI company xAI has secured a U.S. Department of Defense contract worth up to $200 million to bring its Grok AI to federal agencies.

The deal is part of the Pentagon’s plan to adopt advanced AI for defense and mission operations.

xAI’s new “Grok for Government” service will now be available through the General Services Administration (GSA), allowing any federal agency to purchase its AI tools.

xAI joins OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, who have also signed similar $200 million deals under the Pentagon’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO).

Scientists from the University of Cambridge have created a new type of electronic “skin” made from a soft, gelatin-based hydrogel.

This material can sense various types of touch, including pokes, pressure, heat, cold, and even damage like cuts.

To test its abilities, the researchers poked it, heated it with a heat gun, and cut it with a scalpel. This helped show how the skin can detect different sensations through just one type of built-in sensor.

In total, the team collected 1.7 million data points during testing. They used this data to train a machine learning system that helps the skin recognize different types of touch.

This low-cost, durable skin could one day help robots or prosthetic limbs "feel" their surroundings, improving how they interact with people and objects.

Dubai is launching WOOHOO, the world’s first restaurant powered by an AI chef, in September 2025 near the Burj Khalifa.

At the heart of it is Chef Aiman, an AI created by UAE startup UMAI. Trained on decades of food science and thousands of global recipes, Chef Aiman designs the menu, ambience, and even service style by analyzing elements like texture, acidity, and umami.

While human chefs — led by Dubai’s Reif Othman — cook the food, the recipes come from Aiman’s creative algorithms. Chefs refine the dishes through real-world tasting and feedback.

WOOHOO also aims to reduce food waste by reusing ingredients like meat trimmings and fat. Expect a mix of Japanese, Mexican, and Peruvian flavors — all crafted by code.

In Dubai, your next fine-dining experience might just be programmed.

A surgical robot developed by Johns Hopkins University, called the Surgical Robot Transformer-Hierarchy (SRT-H), has successfully removed a gallbladder from a realistic human-like model with 100% accuracy—without human help.

Instead of being programmed step by step, the robot learned like a junior doctor: by watching real surgeries. It was trained using videos of gallbladder removals on pig cadavers, with each action labeled and explained through captions and voice commands. This helped it understand not just what to do, but why.

SRT-H completed a complex 17-step gallbladder removal procedure multiple times on lifelike models, adjusting in real time to challenges like tissue color changes or varying starting positions. In every test, it performed with expert-level precision.

The robot uses advanced AI, like the tech behind ChatGPT, to follow voice commands and adapt during surgery if things change. It took longer than human doctors, but handled everything on its own.

The next step: testing SRT-H on other types of surgery. While it's not yet approved for operating on live humans, the research team expects that could happen within the next decade.

A Turkish court has officially blocked access to Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company, xAI, after it allegedly made offensive comments about President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, and other national figures.

The move came after Grok reportedly responded to user questions with insulting remarks. Some of these responses also targeted Erdogan’s late mother and included content seen as disrespectful to religious values.

Following public complaints, the Ankara Chief Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation. Authorities cited Turkish laws that criminalize insulting the president, which can lead to up to four years in prison.

The court accepted a request to block access to Grok and ordered Turkey’s telecom watchdog to enforce the ban.

This is Turkey’s first official ban on an AI chatbot, setting a precedent for how the country may handle AI-generated content that crosses legal or cultural lines.
