GRANT DIGEST ZAMBIA CHAN EXIT

Coach Avram Grant says Chipolopolo’s future is bright despite making a disastrous outing to the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Kenya.

Zambia has been eliminated from the CHAN after losing all the four group matches against Kenya, Morocco, Angola and DR Congo.

Grant said Zambia made some improvements in the final match against Kenya despite losing 1-0 yesterday.

He told reporters in Kenya that Zambia used the CHAN to prepare for future games, in particular the Africa Cup.

LUANSHYA CEMETERY CLOSED PARTIALLY

The Luanshya Municipal Council has closed the Luanshya Old Wing Cemetery high-cost area, popularly known as Milemu.

Council Public Relations Manager Gideon Thole says the cemetery has reached full capacity and shall no longer be used for burials with immediate effect.

"Residents are therefore advised to submit burial applications for the designated high cost cemetery adjacent to the Antelope Sports Field. The Council has ensured that this site remains ready and available for public use," Mr. Thole said.

He said the partial closure does not affect the open wing burial site, (the low cost area) and the children wing.

The Council’s department of development planning has started the process of identifying an area surrounding Town Centre, which would be suitable to house a graveyard in the near future once the entire Luanshya Main Cemetery reaches full capacity," Mr Thole added.

HOMILY FOR THE MONDAY OF THE 20th WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR C

Readings of the Day
Judges 2:11-19
Res Psalm 105
Matthew 19:16-22

*INTRODUCTION*
My dear beloved friends in Christ, today is the Monday of the 20th week in Ordinary Year C.

*ABOUT THE FIRST READING*
Our First reading, tells a sad story about the Israelites. After their great leader Joshua died, they forgot about God. They started worshipping fake gods, so God allowed their enemies to take over. When they were in trouble, they cried out to God, and in His kindness, He sent a new leader, a "judge," to save them. But as soon as that judge died, they went right back to their old, bad habits. It was a never-ending cycle of sin and being rescued. This story shows us how easily people can fall away from God, and how patient God is in always forgiving them.

*ABOUT THE GOSPEL READING*

In our Gospel reading, we meet a young man who seems to have it all. He is rich, he follows the commandments, and he wants to know how to get to heaven. Jesus tells him to obey the commandments, which the young man says he already does. Then Jesus gives him one final, challenging command: "Go, sell everything you have and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." The young man was sad because he had a lot of money and wasn’t willing to give it up. He was a good person, but his wealth was holding him back from following Jesus completely.

*WHAT DO WE LEARN FROM THE TWO STORIES TAKEN FROM THE READINGS OF TODAY*

These two stories, from long ago, are very much like our own lives today. The Israelites were distracted by the false gods of their neighbors, and the rich young man was held back by his love for his money. Both show us that the things we value can get in the way of our relationship with God. We can get so attached to things—our jobs, our money, our comfort, or even our reputation—that we forget to put God first.

Just like the Israelites, we can get caught in a cycle of sin. We forget about God when things are going well, and only turn to Him when we're in trouble. And like the rich young man, we can be good people who follow many of God’s rules, but we are still held back by something we aren’t willing to give up.

*CONCLUSION*

Today, let's think about what is holding us back. What are we unwilling to let go of for the sake of God? Is it a habit, a possession, or an attitude? God is always ready to save us, but He also asks us to be all-in, to follow Him with our whole heart. When we let go of the things that stand in our way, we make room for God to do great things in our lives.

Let us pray for the strength to let go of whatever is holding us back so that we can follow Jesus completely.

*Have a blessed new week Everyone!*

MONDAY, 18TH AUGUST 2025

TWENTIETH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR C.

FIRST READING
“The Lord raised up judges, yet they did not listen to them.”

*A reading from the Book of Judges (JUDGES 2: 11 - 19)*

In those days: The sons of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals; and they forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; they went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were round about them, and bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. They forsook the Lord, and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them; and he sold them into the power of their enemies round about, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies. Whenever they marched out, the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord had warned, and as the Lord had sworn to them; and they were in great distress. Then the Lord raised up judges, who saved them out of the power of those who plundered them. And yet they did not listen to their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods and bowed down to them; they soon turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord, and they did not do so. Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them. But whenever the judge died, they turned back and behaved worse than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them; they did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways.

*RESPONSORIAL PSALM*
Taken from Psalm 106: 34 - 35, 36 - 37, 39 - 40, 43ab and 44 (R.) 4ab

And the response is;
*R/. O Lord, remember us with the favour you show to your people.*

They failed to destroy the peoples,
as the Lord had commanded them;
instead they mingled with the nations,
and learned to act as they did. *R/.*

They also served their idols,
And these became a snare to entrap them.
They even offered their sons
and their daughters in sacrifice to demons. *R/.*

So they defiled themselves by their actions;
their deeds were those of a harlot.
Then God’s anger blazed against his people;
he was filled with horror at his heritage. *R/.*

Time after time he rescued them,
But in their malice they dared to defy him.
In spite of this he paid heed to their distress,
So often as he heard their cry. *R/.*

*GOSPEL ACCLAMATION*
Matthew 5: 3

*Alleluia*.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
*Alleluia*.

*GOSPEL*
If you would be perfect, sell what you possess, and you will have treasure in heaven.

*A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (MATTHEW 19: 16 - 22)*

At that time: Behold, one came up to Jesus, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life? And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments. He said to him, which?” And Jesus said, “You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, Honour your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The young man said to him, “All these I have observed; what do I still lack? Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.
