Blue Marlin Publications Established in 1999, we are an independent publisher, and our goals are simple: to publish and promote quality children's picture books and middle grade novels.

We want young readers (and their parents, of course) to laugh and have fun as they learn. Who are we? We are an independent publisher, and our goals are simple: to publish and promote quality children's and middle grade books. We want young readers (and their parents, of course) to laugh as they learn. Are we serious? Very. And as a serious, responsible publisher who is also a conscientious member of the literary community, we donate a portion of the proceeds of book sales to nonprofit organizations who are aligned with the themes in our books and who support causes we are passionate about. Why Blue Marlin? No, we are not fisherpeople. And the books we publish are not about fish. Our name is in honor of the main character of one of our favorite books, The Old Man and the Sea, by Ernest Hemingway. And, if that's not enough, the blue marlin makes a great logo.

Larry Bird is one of the most accomplished basketball players in
American History, but he doesn’t hold any big secrets to the
game or any super human talent. His keys to his success have
always been practice, persistence, and a belief in himself. Most
books about famous athletes focus on the career of the person as
a professional athlete. This story focuses only on Larry Bird’s life
BEFORE he became the star of the Boston Celtics. This is the
story of his childhood. #larrybird #BostonCeltics

As Veterans Day approaches, it's a good time to teach young kids what it means to be a veteran. In our book, What is a Veteran, Anyway? Dr. Snyder, a former Army Reserve Officer, who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, helps answer this question. For more details visit: http://www.bluemarlinpubs.com/What%20is%20a%20Veteran%20Catalog.html

Veterans Day is a wonderful holiday for citizens to recognize the brave men and women who keep us free! This illustrated book is designed for teachers, parents, and children of all ages to be able to witness and understand the sacrifices veterans make and the camaraderie they experience. It emphasizes, in a simple-to-read format, what veterans go through on a daily basis. The aim is to allow children to relate their own life experiences to the everyday sacrifices veterans make, whether deployed overseas or training in peacetime. Most importantly, it is based on Robert Snyder’s 15 years of service in the U.S. Army, including a one-year tour in Baghdad, Iraq during the first year of the war.

About A Penny From My Sister
When Cindy and Mickey have a sleepover at Grammy Gale’s house at the sea shore, Grammy Gale lets them explore all the attic treasures she has collected since she, herself, was a child. When Cindy and Mickey discover something they never knew about Grammy Gale, she tells them a touching story about her childhood with her sister and about a very special bond between them--a connection that has continued throughout Grammy Gale’s whole life. A Penny From My Sister evolved from the author’s life-long connection to her own twin sister. Peter Catalanotto’s vivid watercolor and pencil illustrations bring to life the warmth of summer and the forever love of family.

SRU’s Snyder pens ‘What is a Veteran, Anyway?’

Happy Book Release Day to What is a Veteran, Anyway? Blue Marlin is so proud to bring this story to children. This book is brilliantly authored by retired Army Police Captain, Robert Snyder, Ph.D, and beautifully illustrated by long-time children's book illustrator, Ron Himler.

Thank you to ALL our veterans who have bravely served--and continue to serve--our country. To quote the amazingly astute Will Rogers: "We can't all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by."

Today, Blue Marlin is clapping and clapping and clapping.

We've included a cover illustration here, along with a few early sketches to give you a glimpse of Ron Himler's craft.

Would you like to help?

I am trying to organize the placement of a few bookcases of LARGE PRINT books (books of all kinds) at local nursing homes on Long Island. I am starting with Our Lady of Consolation Nursing Home in West Islip, NY and Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Sayville, NY. I am at OLOC a couple of times a week, and I've noticed there are not enough large print books for the residents to enjoy.

If you would like to donate any and all of the large print books you have/find, please mail your donations to Blue Marlin Publications at 823 Aberdeen Road, Bay Shore NY 11706.

I want to begin with enough to place an entire bookcase of books in the cafe at Our Lady of Consolation. Residents and Patients will be able to use this bookcase as a Large Print loaning library whenever they visit the cafe with their friends and relatives.

Thanks, all!

Now here is a lady your students should read about!

One of the great heroes of WWII led a secret operation to successfully smuggle 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto, saving them from almost certain death, yet few people know the name of this largely unsung hero or have heard Irena Sendler's incredible story. Born in 1910, Sendler was a Polish Catholic nurse and social worker who began aiding Jews as early as 1939 after the Germans invaded Poland. At first, she helped to create false documents for over 3,000 Jewish families and later joined the Zegota, the underground Polish resistance organization created to aid the country's Jewish population.

In 1943, Sendler became head of Zegota's children's division and used her special access to the Warsaw Ghetto, granted to Social Welfare Department employees to conduct inspections for typhus, to set up a smuggling operation. She and her colleagues began secretly transporting babies and children out of the Ghetto by hiding them in an ambulance with a false bottom or in baskets, coffins, and even potato sacks. The children were then given false identities and placed with Polish families or in orphanages. To allow the children to be reunited with any surviving relatives following the war, Sendler buried lists containing the identities and locations of the children in jars.

After rescuing over 2,500 children, Sendler was arrested by the Gestapo, tortured and sentenced to death. Fortunately, Zegota was able to bribe the German guards as she was on her way to execution and she was forced to live in hiding for the remainder of the war. In 1965, Sendler was honored by Yad Vashem as one of the Polish Righteous among the Nations for her wartime efforts. She passed away in 2008 at the age of 98.

A fascinating part of Sendler's incredible story is that it may have been entirely lost to history except for the impressive research efforts of several high school students in Kansas. In 1999, high school teacher, Norm Conard, encouraged three of his students, Megan Steward, Elizabeth Cambers, and Sabrina Coons, to work on a year-long National History Day project. Starting with a short news clipping that mentioned Sendler, the girls conducted a year-long investigation into her life and, ultimately, wrote a play about Sendler entitled "Life in a Jar."

The play ignited interest in Sendler's story and it has been performed hundreds of times across the US, Canada, and in Poland. The young researchers also had an opportunity to meet Sendler in Poland in 2001; the forgotten hero whose amazing story they helped bring to light.

For an excellent book about Sendler's life and the Kansas students' project to bring her story to light, we highly recommend "Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project" for ages 13 and up at http://www.amightygirl.com/life-in-a-jar-the-irena-sendler-project

If you'd like to inspire your kids with Sendler's amazing story, there are two children's books about her life: "Irena's Jar of Secrets" for ages 6 to 10 (http://www.amightygirl.com/irena-s-jars-of-secrets) and "Irena Sendler and the Children of the Warsaw Ghetto" for ages 9 and up (http://www.amightygirl.com/irena-sendler-and-the-children-of-the-warsaw-ghetto).

There have also been two films produced about Sendler: "The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler," starring Anna Paquin, for ages 13 and up (http://www.amightygirl.com/the-courageous-heart-of-irena-sendler) and a documentary, "Irena Sendler: In the Name of Their Mothers," for ages 12 and up (http://www.amightygirl.com/irena-sendler-in-the-name-of-their-mothers).

Happy Father's Day, all you great dads! It just so happens that Blue Marlin has a great book for dads to read with their little ones! This one's about a little boy who spends his time wishing he could be just like his father who has bigger feet, a bigger car, and lots of other "biggers." But then the boy realizes there are certain things that don't come in "big and tall" sizes!
