North Vancouver’s Lynn Canyon suspension bridge will be closed to visitors for more than two months for repair work.

According to the District of North Vancouver, the popular bridge will shut Oct. 1 and will remain closed until mid-December, when the project is expected to be complete.

Construction work will be carried out on the bridge’s east approach boardwalk and staircase, which “have reached the end of life” and require replacing, the district said.

BC Ferries says it is investigating whether passenger-only vessels could play a role in the company’s future.

The company’s recently-released 25-year vision states that vessels taking just passengers and no vehicles could join the fleet.

Nothing is planned at this time; however, BC Ferries says passenger-only ferries could reduce travel times for passengers travelling without a car and smaller vessels lead to lower operating costs.

Passenger-only vessels are already in use in B.C., with Hullo Ferries travelling between Vancouver and Nanaimo and CIRQL Ferries is planning to bring passenger-only ferries to B.C. in 2027.

The number of school-aged children in the North Shore’s two district municipalities has barely budged in the last 23 years, according to data from BC Stats.

Between 2001 and 2024, the District of North Vancouver’s total population grew by 16 per cent but there were actually 694 fewer residents aged five to 18 in the municipality last year – a decline of four per cent.

While West Vancouver’s total population was up 14 per cent in the last 23 years, there were only 259 more children in 2024 – a more or less flat growth rate for young people.

The City of North Vancouver, by contrast, had 1,531, or 16 per cent, more children in 2024 than it did in 2001, while the municipality as a whole grew by 46 per cent.

A reminder to all outdoor lovers to pack it in and pack it out so we can leave natural areas as we found it. According to the BC Ministry of Environment and Parks, this is the “final temporary closure” for the park this year, and it will take place between Sept. 2 and Oct. 3.

During that period of time, Joffre Lakes Park will be closed to all recreational visitors.

The statement says the September to October closure will allow the park to recover from a busy summer, while also allowing members of the Lli’Wat Nation and N’Quatqua to “reconnect with the land, carry out cultural and spiritual practices and recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.”

Kathmandu, a popular New Zealand-based outdoor brand, is celebrating its entrance into the Canadian marketplace by hosting the free Kathmandu World’s Biggest Hike on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Not only is the event attempting to set a new Guinness World Record for the “most people hiking simultaneously,” it’s also helping to raise funds for several local non-profit organizations.

According to their website you can hike up the 4-kilometer path to the top of Sky Quad with over 1,000 other hikers, then download back to the base where you can look forward to music, food, and all-around good times.
