Happy 40th BTTF, from BTTB!

The entire team at Back Through The Basement Podcast and the whole Antonellis family extend a hearty Happy 40th to the cast and crew of the beloved film, “Back to the Future” celebrating it’s 40th anniversary today, July 3, 1985.

40 years ago next month [see inset], Mom and Dad bought the novel for podcast co-host Tom Antonellis on August 31, 1985. Seems a bit late in the summer to have been a beach book for what might have been a potential Cape Cod vacation that year. Seems too early to be a birthday present for Tom’s September birthday that year. Best guess: that was simply a “just because” gift of love from Mom and Dad and – Tom speaking here – it’s remained a cherished part of my for four solid decades. Thank you, Mom and Dad!

You may not know: the first chapter of this novelization, written by George Gipe and based, of course, on Bob Gale & Robert Zemeckis’s screenplay (Marty’s run-in with Strickland, his less-than-thrilling band audition, his stroll with Jennifer through Hill Valley’s center of town, “Save the Clock Tower!”) it all rolls out quite a bit differently in the book than it does in the film. Have you read the novelization? Of course, the cover of the book is also the famous movie poster by the great Drew Struzan featuring as Marty McFly and the infamous time machine.

What’s your favorite moment? Let us know in the comments.

And tag us if you post your memorabilia today!

While there were games before Pac-Man, we can think of no more seminal a videogame than this one. And we’ve been fans since the 80s. Happy 45th Anniversary to the videogame that was so critical in introducing us to videogames.

This pic shows our cred as 80s Pac-Man fans: one of our childhood thermoses unearthed during time spent in the Basement during my podcast, “Back Through The Basement” (which is available wherever you listen to podcasts).

Do you have any Pac-Man memorabilia or paraphernalia?

Do you know the names of those four colored ghosts?

May the 4th – and the FORCE – be with you!

Chewbacca and R2-D2 play the holographic board game Dejarik (aka holochess or space chess) in ‘Star Wars Episode 4 - A New Hope’. Han Solo and Lando Calrissian play the card game Sabacc.

We learned, in ‘Star Wars Episode 5 - The Empire Strikes Back’, that Han famously won the Millennium Falcon “fair and squre” from Lando while playing that game. We then see the event enacted in the film, ‘Solo - A Star Wars Story’.

In the spirit of , from these and other examples in the , today called for a visit to both Tom and Julee’s game closets for our celebration of . Julee dug out her Star Wars Clue and Tom dug out his Star Wars Monopoly pictured here.

How did you spend the day today?

Celebrating Porky Pig who made his debut 90 years ago on March 2, 1935.

Looney Tunes are an absolute favorite in the Antonellis household — there have been a few Looney Tunes and general Warner Brothers treasures unearthed in the Basement. We checked: there wasn’t a die cast Porky Pig figure in the plastic slotted organizer trays! Bugs, yes. Tweety, yes. And a few more. No Porky. What a bummer for this enduring character.

This apt picture of Porky with a birthday cake 🎂 we DID find in one of our Looney Tunes childhood books in the Little Yellow Library (formerly Julee’s childhood bedroom).

“Unhappy with a new treaty, Federation Colonists along the Cardassian border have banded together. Calling themselves ‘The Maquis’, they continue to fight the Cardassians. Some consider them heroes, but to the governments of the Federation and Cardassia, they are outlaws.”

With that text in an onscreen scroll, an astonishing 30 YEARS AGO today, “Star Trek: Voyager” debuted!

Back Through The Basement podcast co-host Tom Antonellis would often gather for viewing parties at Syracuse University with many of his friends. If he couldn’t gather, you can be sure he taped it by – you guessed it: setting the VCR 📼 !

Over the years, Tom’s had the pleasure of meeting many of Voyager’s cast: notably , , , , , , & Jeri Ryan Official .

He hasn’t yet had the pleasure of saluting Kate Mulgrew , the captain, but Tom has always admired her. That’s her action figure from Playmates Toys in the picture! We at Back Through The Basement podcast, wanted to share the fact that Kate’s son, Alec Egan , lost everything in the horrible fires plaguing LA: his house, his studio, all of his art. We invite you to Kate’s social media channels where she has a post explaining where you might support Alec by purchasing a personalized poster of his art.

We got 172 visits with the intrepid crew of the USS Voyager and we’re grateful for every one of them. Happy 30th Anniversary!!

We at ‘Back Through The Basement’ wish to add our voices to the chorus of Morgan Lofting fans who are saying goodbye to a beloved voiceover hero.

We were introduced to Morgan Lofting’s work through a BELOVED show from our youth: ‘G. I. Joe’. Both co-hosts, Julee and Tom, adored this show, tuning in every day. G. I. Joe action figures were a frequent birthday and Christmas ask. In this picture is our original Hasbro Baroness action figure and DVDs from the show. If you tuned in to ‘G. I. Joe’ in the 80s, you heard Morgan as the voice of the Baroness. She could also be heard on ‘Jem’, ‘Transformers’ and as Aunt May Parker as well as Black Cat in ‘Spider-Man’. (On camera work included ‘Knots Landing’ and ‘Trapper John, M.D.’)

This quote was from an interview in which Morgan described crafting her approach to Baroness: “When I auditioned for the [Baroness] character, you’re handed, generally, a sketch…which is extremely helpful and there was probably a character background and they must have said something about an accent…you start to get ideas and then you go somewhere out in a field somewhere and you work on your voice…and somehow I came up with this mid-European sound. I have no idea where it came from. There is no country where anybody speaks like this…and the thing I think that may have clinched it was there was the ‘Cobraaaaaaa!’ and I just let loose…Mike Bell [voice of Duke] used to say that there was blood on the control room window when I finished with ‘Cobra’.”

She will be missed.

Though neither host of “Back Through The Basement” was yet alive 55 years ago today on November 10, 1969, the course of our lives would still be affected by what is special about that day: it was the premiere of “Sesame Street”.

For 55 years, since 1969, the year we landed on the moon right on up to this year, Sesame Street has been teaching critical lessons. Even as recently as these past few weeks, Sesame Street taught us when Elmo spoke with Andrew Garfield about grieving and we were soothed by quiet scenic shots of the iconic street which were shared on November 4.

In this picture, we share the “5” page of “The Sesame Street Book of Numbers” (in celebration of 55 years) – the book was given to co-host Tom Antonellis by our maternal grandparents when Tom was 2 (before co-host Julee Antonellis was even born!).

Are you a Sesame Street kid? What’s your favorite Sesame Street moment?

The first time “Back Through The Basement” co-host Tom Antonellis beheld “Liberty Enlightening the World” (the official name of The Statue of Liberty) was in the 1980s upon his first visit to New York City. (That visit was close to Liberty’s 100th birthday.) Though she was under scaffolding for renovation at that time, it was as if the scaffolding wasn’t even there — her beauty radiated through and Tom was deeply moved.

This is an illustration Tom rendered in his youth somewhere around that time (circa 1985) in colored pens on poster board which we unearthed on “School Island” some time ago.

Join Tom and co-host Julee Antonellis in celebrating our love of New York City and celebrating Liberty’s 138th birthday today.

Have you ever visited Liberty Island? How did you feel?

This one HURRRRRRTS. Both co-hosts Julee Antonellis and Tom Antonellis adore Dame Maggie Smith. An entire post could be filled with her accolades: 58 competitive awards wins from 157 nominations. including 4 primetime Emmys, 3 Golden Globes, 2 Oscars, a Tony, and numerous SAG Awards.

Upon reflecting on her performances – and you’re probably running through them in your head – don’t you feel like you’re a Hogwart’s student learning from one of your favorite Professors? For two actors such as Tom and Julee, watching her was, in itself, a master class: every look, every vocal nuance, her dialects, her subtlety.

From high comedy as Mother Superior in the ‘Sister Act’ films, to high fantasy as Granny Wendy in ‘Hook’ or Professor McGonagall in the ‘Harry Potter’ films, to the pinnacle of period pieces as “Charlotte Bartlett, a Chaperon” in ‘A Room with a View’ as well as her turns as Violet Grantham in ‘Downton Abbey’, to mythology as Thetis in ‘Clash of the Titans’ (probably our introduction to her work), to , to , to , to , from TV to the silver screen to the stage. What a legacy of fine art.

We at Back Through The Basement podcast wish peace to her family, friends and fans.

“Back Through The Basement” co-hosts (and siblings) Tom Antonellis & Julee Antonellis have long-standing relationships with the Caped Crusader. We have unearthed this on the podcast as our listeners – our Keepers – know the audio footage of Tom on Christmas morning at the age of 3 years old receiving a Robin doll! And we’ve found many Batman and Batman-related toys and belongings in our episodes to date. Including this Batman pin which we found in the plastic slotted organizer trays. (Now, Julee may not be enthusiastic about pins but she loves Batman!!)

Batman himself celebrates his own birthday this year: his 85th. He appeared first in “Detective Comics #27” in a story titled ‘The Case of the Chemical Syndicate’ written by Bill Finger and illustrated by Bob Kane in 1939 ( DC Comics ). That’s as long ago as ‘Gone with The Wind’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’! From that moment to this one, Batman has inspired and captured the imagination — including William Dozier’s who created the 1966 TV series (our first introduction to) and the imagination one of our favorite directors, Tim Burton, whose 1989 film reinvigorated the franchise immeasurably. This official pin commemorates the 1989 Batman movie making this pin, like the movie, 40 years old this year. Let us know in the comments if you remember, in the lead-up to that movie, people doubting Michael Keaton’s casting. How wrong they were!

is celebrated on the third Saturday of September of every year. Follow Batman and visit www.dcDOTcomSLASHbatman to stay up to date on more surrounding Batman’s 85th anniversary taking place around the world this year.

We at ‘Back Through The Basement’ wish to add our voices to the chorus of James Earl Jones fans who are saying goodbye to a beloved acting and voiceover icon.

Of course we were introduced to James’s work through, Star Wars, as the voice of Darth Vader. It’s astonishing to think that he made a flat fee of $7000 to voice Vader for Lucas and he didn’t really even acknowledge doing it until the 3rd film (‘Return of the Jedi’). Subsequent re-releases and re-issues of the early films did feature his credit. From Vader to others of our favorites — Mufasa to King Jaffe Joffer to Admiral Greer to Mr. Bernard Abbott (do you know that role?!), to Terence Mann, to Thulsa Doom, to Balthazar, to numerous narrators, to the voice of “This is CNN” – James Earl Jones is truly a voice for the ages and an indelible actor whose like we’re not likely to ever see again.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and fans in the wake of his passing.

[In this picture: our die-cast metal vintage Kenner Star Wars Micro Darth Vader from the 1980s as unearthed on our podcast. He’s less than 2 inches tall.]

Back Through The Basement - A Time-Trip Podcast from the Heart

Got a cup of coffee? Cool. Ok. First, thank you for finding the official page for Back Through The Basement !

LOGLINE: “Tom and Julee Antonellis (actors, comics, voiceover artists and siblings), children of the 80s, must go through all their toys and belongings in their parents’ basement. Oh boy!”

Back Through The Basement (BTTB) is a bicoastally-recorded, nostalgic trip (during safer-at-home quarantine) in which hosts Tom Antonellis and Julee Antonellis bring listeners ALL their artistic sensibilities -- plus that inimitable Tom-Julee sibling banter! -- along with funny character voices, spot-on impressions, improv, lots of laughs and, of course, the classic 80s toys of our day. There’s even vintage childhood audio from Christmas mornings dating all the way back to 1977 in which we’re often opening the gifts being unearthed in the episode! We have a visual element as well: follow us on Instagram @backthroughthebasementpod and enjoy seeing pictures of the toys and treasures we’re unearthing. And, let’s be real, there are also some tears – because how can you NOT get emotional doing this kind of project? Especially given the incredibly stressful 2020 we all find ourselves in.
