Poilievre: During his 2025 presidential campaign, Poilievre used immigrants as scapegoats by blaming them for the increase in housing prices. ⁉️

Trump: Trump has a loooong history of scapegoating immigrants. This doesn’t require much explanation. 👀

Trump and Biden, and a bunch of other politicians: Politicians HATE taking accountability, blaming it on the previous person is just SO MUCH easier! And the public is TOO STOOPID to know the difference right? Right?? 👎

Katy Perry: Companies, like ProActive, will try to convince you that their product is the only one that works! Raise your hand if you’ve fallen for this sh*t before and want your money back 🙋

“Overrrsimplifiiicaaation” - Lil D

Sometimes things aren’t that simple. And that’s ok!

Here are some examples of oversimplification you may have seen:

A: Poilievre was trying sooo hard to make us hate the carbon tax. For the vast majority of Canadian tax payers, it wasn’t even a tax, it was a rebate! A new edition just dropped - the Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR). Check it out!

B: Taxes are not the reason companies may be moving elsewhere - it’s corporate greed. Companies can afford taxes, they just don’t want to pay them.

C: Oh Trump and his hoaxes. He just can’t get enough of them! Unfortunately for him, global warming is NOT a hoax. And just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean that decades of scientific evidence can be thrown at the window. Let’s be for real.

D: Anti-zionism is not the same as being anti-semitc. Palestinian liberation does not mean jewish oppression. Saying that these are the same thing is a large part of why our governments have let Israel’s war crimes slide.

Nut attack! 🌰

Let’s break down some popular ones 👇

Example A: Trump is referring to representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib, known as "The Squad". At the time of this video, their views were far more progressive than the average Democrat. And they were not leading the party.

Example B: Willie Horton was just one of many convicted criminals who participated in weekend passes, and one of very few who went on to commit more violent crimes. But, Bush used Horton to push his agenda, which helped him win the presidency. 🏆👎

Example C: Trump uses a minority of illegal immigrant criminals to qualify all illegal immigrants as violent criminals that threaten the safety of citizens. Multiple studies have found that US citizens are actually more likely to commit violent crimes than illegal immigrants.

Examples D&E: Negative stereotypes have a nutty person at the center of them. But this nut is used by the media to silence groups that threaten them. Now, popular stereotypes like feminists hate all men, vegans shove their veganism in your face, and all activists are anarchists, agitators, and looters, are everywhere!

Don’t build your case off of the loudest, weirdest dude in the room. It's lazy.

The election is here - what bad logic did candidates use during their campaigns?

Let’s break it down ⬇️

Poilievre campaigned on fighting the “woke” agenda (*ahem* sound familiar?). “Persecuted victim” arguments make people feel like there’s a big bad thing out there (in this case: les woke) and the only way to stop it is to VOTE FOR ME!

Faulty generalization
1. Pipelines in Quebec - Carney said he would use federal powers to emergency approve energy projects (for oil or other sources), but never said he would do so without Quebec’s permission
2. Defunding Ukraine - Not entirely accurate. Poilievre has promised massive cuts but has vowed to continue supporting Ukraine.
3. Forced oil and gas in Quebec - Carney said he will review the budget but will protect transfers to individuals and provinces, + promises to spend more on healthcare. Poilievre wants to cut down waste and red tape + cutting the size of public services but vows to protect healthcare and daycare.

Cherry picking
1. 6 Houses - Although it is true that CMHC only built 6 non-profit housing units alone under Poilievre, over 4,000 non-profit homes and co-ops were built through partnerships with private companies.
2. High taxes - this comes from a 2023 Fraser Institute report, a right leaning think-tank. In their calculations, they included down payments on future benefits (aka not taxes!) and did not take into account rebates or inflation. When you do that, the change in taxes as % of income is virtually unchanged since 2016.
3. Liberal Crime Wave - Canada is relatively much safer than it has been historically, especially since the 80s and 90s. However, Poilievre is cherry picking certain crime statistics and comparison years that prove his point.

Bill C-69: C-69 allows the federal government to look at the impact that resource development projects could have on climate change. It does not mean that they automatically slash every oil and gas-related project!

Appeal to Coincidence!

Example A: We all love Charlie Brown but he’s not known for his use of great logic. Use your critical thinking Charlie! 🏈

Example B: Remember how Big To***co used 🍒 cherry-picking 🍒 to manipulate us? They used an appeal to coincidence as well! They claimed the link between cancer and smoking to***co was coincidental, not causational. 🤨

Example C: Following in Big To***co’s footsteps - Big Oil did it too! 😱

Example D: Religions ignoring scientific evidence of evolution and blaming coincidence on certain scientific discoveries are appealing to coincidence. 🙈🙉

Example E: Elon Musk says it was a gesture of love to his supporters 😍, but does he love all of his supporters equally? Based on things he's recently said and promoted, (*ahem* the far-right, nazi-sympathizing party in Germany) it seems not. It’s hard to argue that he wasn’t appealing to coincidence! 😬

"CO2 helps plants grow, so more CO2 is just better, right?" 🪴 That’s like saying, “Eating one cookie made me happy, so eating 100 will make me ecstatic!” 🍪 Spoiler: it won’t. (Hello, stomachache.)

This is classic Slothful Induction—a.k.a. ignoring mountains of evidence because it’s inconvenient. 🙈

Ignoring science and blaming it all on coincidence? That’s not a vibe—it’s a logical fallacy.

🍒 Debunking good ol’ Cherry Picking 🍒

Cherry picking has been around for a while. I mean why tell the whole truth when just part of the truth makes you look so so much better?

Let’s break some of the examples down:

🚬Cigarettes used to be so à la mode. And then it was discovered that they cause cancer, which made Big To***co very unhappy 😣. What did they do about it? They did their own research and cherry picked findings to prove that it actually isn’t so bad for you!

🛢Big Oil did the same in the 1980s, and continues to this day…

👀 Watch out! Rumor has it Big Food 🍔 is doing the same to us right now!

You may have also come across Canada Proud or Debunk Inc. (❗️they are NOT debunking like we’re debunking). They’re using cherry-picking (and other tactics) to try to sway your vote in the upcoming election. 🗳🇨🇦
