On a foggy Saturday morning—July 28, 1945—New York City was jolted by an unimaginable event. A B-25 Mitchell bomber, lost in low visibility, slammed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building, tearing through its steel frame and igniting a fire hundreds of feet above the ground.
The impact killed 14 people—three crew members aboard the plane and eleven office workers inside the building. One of the plane's engines rocketed through the structure and plunged down an elevator shaft, sparking a blaze that burned for hours. Miraculously, the skyscraper itself remained standing. Even more incredible, a young elevator operator named Betty Lou Oliver survived a 75-story fall, the longest ever recorded.
Despite the devastation, the Empire State Building reopened just two months later. New Yorkers—true to their spirit—cleaned up, repaired the wounds, and moved forward. The crash exposed flaws in air traffic safety and sparked changes in urban flight regulations, leaving behind not just scarred steel but new policies to protect future lives.
Today, that moment remains a reminder: even in the face of disaster, resilience can rise as tall as the skyline itself.
