We drove from Mt. Rainier and reached the Olympic National Park Visitor Center in Port Angeles by 1:30 PM. After grabbing maps and checking into our hotel, we headed to Hurricane Ridge around 6 PM and hiked up to Sunrise Point, spotting deer, bunnies, wildflowers, and even a bear family in the meadows on our way down.

The next day, we visited Lake Crescent and hiked to Marymere Falls and Sol Duc Falls.

On Day 3, we explored tide pools at Kalaloch Beach 4, visited a 1000-year-old Western Red Cedar, and tried for Ruby Beach - but couldn’t find parking. That evening we stayed in Forks and explored the quiet town.

The next morning, we visited the mossy trails of the Hoh Rainforest, and in the evening, stopped by Rialto Beach, where we spotted a harbor seal in the fog.

On the final day, we went whale watching and saw orcas and a humpback whale, before driving to Seattle.

Growing up by the Bay of Bengal and now living in Michigan, I’ve always found my deepest peace in the mountains. This summer, with our daughter’s 4th Grader National Park Pass in hand, we set off to explore Mount Rainier National Park, July 11 - 13.

We arrived in Seattle early Friday morning and reached the Nisqually Entrance by 12:45 PM - with no wait at all. After a serene stop at Eatonville Lake, we explored the Trail of Shadows in Longmire and had lunch at the National Park Inn, where Mt. Rainier appeared and disappeared behind drifting clouds. Driving along the Paradise Corridor, we paused at overlooks, soaking in the mountain’s quiet grandeur, and reached the Paradise Visitor Center by 4 PM. That evening, we checked into LOGE Alta Crystal in Enumclaw, our cozy base for two nights.

Saturday began early with a 6 AM drive back to Paradise. We started on the Myrtle Falls trail and, though unprepared for snow and steep hikes, couldn’t resist venturing partway up the Golden Gate Trail. The trail offers a quick route to breathtaking panoramas of Mount Rainier and the rugged Tatoosh Range. We returned by 10:30 AM to overflowing parking lots, had lunch at Paradise Inn, joined a ranger program, then visited Reflection Lake and Narada Falls before exiting the park for gas. Thankfully, our lodge’s location helped us avoid the very long re-entry lines.

On Sunday, we left before dawn and reached Sunrise Point just in time. As the sun lit up Rainier’s snowy crown, it felt like a quiet benediction. We hiked to Frozen Lake via the Sourdough Ridge Trail, and stopped briefly at Tipsoo Lake, bringing a perfect close to our time in Rainier’s sacred presence.
