Texas has town names that sound like somebody lost a bet at a Dairy Queen, and Cut and Shoot might be one of the best.
Sitting in Montgomery County, just east of Conroe, Cut and Shoot is one of those names that makes people stop and ask, “Wait… that’s a real place?” It is, and the story behind it is pure Texas small-town legend.
According to the Texas State Historical Association, the name goes back to a 1912 community dispute that nearly turned violent. Different versions say the argument may have been over a church steeple, who was allowed to preach, or even land claims among church members. Whatever the exact cause, the story goes that a young boy got nervous during the confrontation and said he was going to “cut around the corner and shoot through the bushes.”
And somehow, because Texas does not waste a good line, the name stuck.
So yes, Cut and Shoot is real. It is not a movie title, not a fake town from an old western, and not something your uncle made up on a road trip. It is just another reminder that Texas geography comes with its own sense of humor.
